The killer of landscape architect Joanna Yeates remains on the loose and women in Bristol should not walk home alone after dark, police have warned.

They acknowledged the alarm in the local community sparked by the grim discovery of the 25-year-old's snow-covered body on Christmas day.

But they reassured the public that patrols had been stepped up in the up-market Clifton area of Bristol where she lived, and that they were "determined to find out" who killed her.

The comments came the day after officers from Avon and Somerset Police freed Miss Yeates's landlord Chris Jefferies on police bail pending further inquiries. The 65-year-old was arrested on suspicion of the murder on Thursday and held until last night, when he was released on police bail.

Speaking outside the smart Victorian property on Canynge Road where Mr Jefferies lives above the flat Miss Yeates shared with her boyfriend, Chief Superintendent Jon Stratford said: "I can understand why the public in the Clifton and wider Bristol area have concerns for their safety. Whoever killed Jo remains at large. However, I want to reassure the public that there remains no specific intelligence or information to suggest there is an increased threat to their safety at this time.

"Naturally we ask the public to continue to take the usual safety precautions. Lone women should avoid walking home alone after dark and householders should keep their premises secure and take care answering the door to strangers."

Increased patrols are being maintained in Clifton to reassure the public, he added, as more than 70 police officers and other staff continue to investigate the brutal crime. He gave assurances that there was nothing to suggest the murderer was a serial killer nor that the public should be extra worried.

Mr Stratford also thanked the public for helping with the inquiry so far, revealing that more than 1,000 phone calls had been received.

"We have been overwhelmed with the level of response from members of the public and continue to ask anyone who thinks they may have any information to lead us to Jo's killer to contact us," he said. "Jo's killer is still out there somewhere and we will find them and bring them to justice. We know Jo was murdered. At the the moment we don't know who killed her but we are determined to find out."

Prayers were said for Miss Yeates on Sunday morning at nearby Christ Church, where associate vicar Dan Clark urged the congregation to remember her family, the police investigating the case and the journalists covering it. He said: "Many of you will know this has been quite a difficult few weeks for the local community following the sad news about Joanna Yeates. I would like us to pause and bring our own quiet prayers for Joanna's family."

Glad i didnt just in with everyone else regarding the landlords involvement in the crime.. tut tut people jumping to conclusions :(

Looks like there is no real evidence at present to confirm who has committed this awful murder. The landlord gave the police a piece of information that he thought was of help to them in the case and ended up being arrested on suspicion of murder.
Should the police findings eventually clear him fully of any involvement as he is the only suspect they seem to have, I hope he is rewarded suitably for his wrongful arrest.
This will end up one of those long winded cases that will either be solved or will sit on a shelf pending future incidents that might be linked to the same murderer.
May you rest till your killer is caught Joanna, then you will be able to rest in peace knowing that justice has been carried out.

Makes you think, when you hear a police appeal just to keep your mouth shut and move along .
You have to blame the police and the press for this, idiots both of them.

Three times ive agreed with you in a year lol.
I beleive in innocent till proven guilty but the press and police obviously employ different tacticts and were probably pushing very hard for a confession and probably with no evidence.

Hope they get the bastard who did it and soon.

It has been reported on the news this morning that a 32 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of Joanna Yeates.

Let's hope this is a positive arrest and that Joanna's parents can then carry on with there grieving knowing that justice has been done.

problem with death penelty is I don't have enough confidence in british justice system that they always get the right person. Just look back on things like birmingham bombers, etc

Also what do you do when person behaviour was the result of a medical condition that could be treated. Similiar the trial last week of the guy who killed his brother because of schizophrenia.

I am sorry but if the criminal is known for having such an illness why are they left to walk the streets and not being watched more closely. Sounds like this is just another excuse to let the criminal off with a soft sentence.IMAHO.

Yes I quite agree Miggy, if they know they have a history of mental illness then some monitoring should be done. It is far to easy these days to say I'm mentally unstable so I couldn't help killing him/her/them.

What about the mental scars the family then have to live with, would they get away with killing the killer on the same ground pr would that be premeditated murder.

With the technology these days and DNA, it is far more accurate than it was in the early days in respect to evidence and concrete proof someone is guilty.

Putting someone on death row would probably cost more than just putting them in prison.. reason being you would have them on death row for years.. then countless court cases which will probably go in the persons favour.. thus the end result will be you guessed it.. prison.. legal system is too soft..

I not about soft sentence. Prison is supposed to be rehabiliation, not just detention. TBH, I think there is a lot about mental health we don't know about. From what I have read, the why victorians treated people with mental health issues worked for some of them. I definately think that there are fair number of people out on the streets who probably shouldn't be there.

A 32-year-old man has been charged with the murder

A 32-year-old man has been charged with the murder of landscape architect Joanna Yeates, police said.

Vincent Tabak will face Bristol Magistrates' Court on Monday accused of killing the 25-year-old.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Jones, who led the inquiry, said: "This evening we have charged Vincent Tabak with the murder of Joanna Yeates.

"I would like to pay tribute to Jo's family and Greg for their assistance and dignity in the most difficult of circumstances. Their support to us has been invaluable.

"I would also like to thank the general public for their help and the information they continue to provide to the investigation, and the residents of Canynge Road for their co-operation and patience."

Dutch engineer Tabak, who lived next door to Miss Yeates at 44 Canynge Road, Clifton, Bristol, was arrested on Thursday.

Specialist search teams have been examining Tabak's flat, which he shares with his girlfriend, Tanja Morson, an analyst for Dyson, in Malmesbury, Wiltshire.

Miss Yeates shared her rented home with her boyfriend, Greg Reardon, 27.

Tabak, a trilingual engineer, is an expert in the flow of people through buildings, including sports venues.

Tabak's arrest was the second to be made by detectives since Miss Yeates's frozen body was found dumped in a lane on the outskirts of Bristol on Christmas Day. Her landlord, Chris Jefferies, 66, was arrested on December 30 and questioned for three days on suspicion of murder before being released on bail.
