iPod ipod nano V itunes

Do u haved to use itunes to put music onto an ipod nano,got one for my 2 kids and i thought when u copied and pasted the music onto its hard drive the software inside the ipod would change it to suit itself.
My daughter tried this and it wouldnt work.

I dont want to get into itunes as we have all the music we need.

Well, you probably could use something else if you really wanted to - but what would be the point? iTunes is designed for the iPods, so anything else would just be a poor approximation, if any exist.

Why dont you just add all your music to iTunes? That way you can add it to your iPod? You dont need to by any from the iTunes store..
