Hi guys I have just updated to XP but it has placed a Virgin Net icon on the desktop which I cannot deleat I use a different ISP how do I get rid of the Icon as it will not go into the recycle bin

There is 2 ways to do this im most cases of win
eather right click and delete (which u prob have tried) and the other which gets rid of it if the other doesnt drag and drop it into the bin!!!baz
ps if this is helpfull vote for me as im tryin to get another star on my rating

This icon cannot be placed in the bin and will not deleat using the right mouse button it remains on the desktop all the time no matter what i do there must be a way to get rid of it any help please

It's a registry job methinks. Open regedit and search for any instances of "Virgin" or "Virgin Net" and delete them. It should be safe to do of you're now using a different ISP but, just to be on the safe side, back up each key before you delete it.

Thanks Cydine I have removed all from the reg but the dam icon on the desktop remains there must be a way to delete this dam thing

try a add/remove plus programme or windows washer type programme that will sort your reg our ...best of luck (at the worst its a reinstall if its become such a pain to deal with....baz

Windows will not delete something that is running!

Try deleting using the add/remove programme...if that dosent work then you can try either deleting from safemode if this still dosent work try this.

Go to start, programs, accesories, system tools, system infomation

Then tools, system configuration utility

then click on the end tab (startup)

Find anything relating to virgin and untick the boxses and reboot....now try and delete

Sorry about that m8

Try pressing ctrl, alt and del at the same time (once) and then click on process....try and identify it and end it...then try and delete from desktop

I ain't installed xp yet so I don't know what tweaking progs are available but there should be some sort of TweakUI program available for it. These type of utils usually allow you to hide desktop icons.

I take it it doesn't give you any sort of message when you try to delete the icon? Plus it is JUST an icon on your desktop is it?

Its a Virgin Net icon which cannot be deleated no matter what I do if I try to deleat it reappears with a message saying this item cannot be deleated

DELETING ICONS FROM THE DESKTOP

1.Select "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ Windows\Curren**ersion\explorer\Desktop\NameSpace"
2.Select the key that you want to delete, then press the delete key. I highly recommend just re-naming the file instead of deleting it so you can fix it if you make a mistake!
3.After Windows is rebooted the icons will no longer show on the desktop.

Well this works with Winme/98/95 so try it and tell me what happens, just when ure in that folder click on each value and if you find it, just click the delete key! Also while ure there change the "Recyle Bin" to "Rubbish"

Good Luck! Hmmm need more gremlins..
