Peter Houston will not become the permanent manager of Scottish Premier League club Dundee United.

The 51-year-old confirmed he did not want the job following Wednesday's 7-1 defeat to Rangers at Ibrox.

Houston had been promoted from his assistant manager's job at Tannadice temporarily, following Craig Levein's appointment as Scotland manager.

However, Houston will stay at Tannadice for the time being and has over two years left on his coaching contract.

Former Hearts assistant manager Houston was put in charge for four games after the United job became vacant.

He opened with a 0-0 draw at home to Kilmarnock before the heavy loss in Glasgow. United are next in action on Saturday against Aberdeen and travel to face Partick Thistle for a Scottish Cup tie on 9 January.
