Filmfour's first films:

on the 23rd:

21:00 Lost In Translation

(2003) A wry and poignant comedy concerning the undercurrent of feelings between middle-aged actor Bill Murray and philosophy graduate Scarlett Johansson when they meet in a Tokyo hotel. By turn comic and touching, the duo turn in pitch-perfect performances in one of the best romantic dramas of recent years.

23:00 Sexy Beast
[subtitles] [audio described]
(2000) Oscar and BAFTA nominated crime thriller. Ray Winstone plays Gary, a professional criminal now living with wife Amanda Redman in Spain. But the peace of his retirement is shattered when former associate and violent psychopath Don (Ben Kingsley) arrives to persuade Gary to return to London for one last job. And Don just won't take no for an answer...

00:40 Infernal Affairs
[subtitles] [widescreen]
(2002) Tony Leung is an undercover cop who's spent ten years infiltrating one of Hong Kong's most notorious Triad gangs. Andy Lau is a bent cop working as a mole for the gang - and the race is on for each to expose the other in Andrew Lau and Alan Mak's explosive thriller. In Cantonese with English subtitles.

Mon 24th:

15:00 This Happy Breed
(1944) David Lean's fascinating picture of the highs and lows of a working-class family between the two World Wars. With Robert Newton.

18:00 Duck Soup
[b & w]
(1933) Classic Marx Brothers comedy, with Groucho as Rufus T Firefly, the President of Freedonia, whose inaugural act is to accidentally precipitate a war with neighbouring Sylvania. Chico and Harpo play the side-switching spies while Zeppo, in his last film as the fourth brother, is Firefly's adviser. Classic sequences include Groucho and Harpo's 'broken mirror' dance routine.

19:15 Strictly Ballroom
[subtitles]
(1992) Kitsch and comic cream puff of a romance set in the sequined rivalry of Australia's ballroom dancing circuit. Baz Luhrmann's film stars Paul Mercurio as a talented dancer who won't dance to the rules. He's aiming for the Pan-Pacific Grand Prix but the only woman who'll partner him is novice Tara Morice. A genuine delight that reveals the seething jealousy behind the fixed smiles and perma-tans of the Come Dancing set.

21:00 The Fifth Element
[subtitles]
(1997) Luc Besson's stunning, audacious science fiction thriller stars Bruce Willis as an ex-government agent, now reduced to driving a taxi in 23rd century New York. Into his lap falls the mysterious Milla Jovovich, a woman created from an alien cell who may be the only hope the world has of salvation from an ever-approaching evil. With Gary Oldman, Chris Tucker and Ian Holm.

23:25 Ghost World
[subtitles]
(2001) Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson star as two close friends just graduated from high school, both cynical, knowing and bored with the world, families and classmates. Then, a lonely hearts prank sees Birch become intrigued with geeky record collector Steve Buscemi while Johansson begins to think about her future rather than just the present.

01:30 The Mambo Kings

(1992) Arne Glimcher's tale of differing ambitions and emotions celebrates the post-war Cuban music craze that swept America. Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas star as brothers who bring their sounds to New York in search of fame and fortune. Assante revels in the fame and the women, but Banderas increasingly finds himself mourning his homeland and lost love.
