Fiennes completes marathon feat

Sir Ranulph said the marathon marathon had been "good fun"
British adventurer Sir Ranulph Fiennes has completed his final marathon out of seven he ran on seven continents in seven days.

The 59-year-old ended his challenge with a race in New York which he finished in five hours and 25 minutes, his running partner Dr Michael Stroud said.

The adventurer had flown from the heat and humidity of Cairo to an autumnal New York to join some 30,000 others in the official marathon around the city's five boroughs.

"It's the best thing possible," Sir Ranulph said at the finishing line. "It was good fun. We thought it would be and it was."

He joked that Dr Stroud, his 49-year-old running partner of 15 years, was a "bit geriatric" but commended him for "pushing" all the way to the end.
Sir Ranulph's personal achievement was all the more remarkable given the punishing jet lag he must have suffered after arriving in a city almost a full working day behind the Middle Eastern time zone.

He said he would like to drink hot chocolate and eat chicken masala.

"Anything without cholesterol in it," added the veteran adventurer who recently underwent heart surgery - and who was raising money for a heart charity.

The racing, he said, had been "very knackering on our legs".

'Good health'

Wearing shirt number 33122, Sir Ranulph had predicted he would complete the race in five hours.

What's happening to his body?

That would have been slightly more than the previous two attempts in London and Cairo.

In Cairo on Saturday, he raced through the night, after just four hours' sleep following the completion of his London marathon on Friday in four hours 41 minutes.

Completed marathons

Despite the heat and Ramadan traffic he managed to better his time of the previous day.

Then he and Dr Stroud headed for a 6am flight to New York.

The pair had completed runs on the Falkland Islands, Santiago in Chile, Sydney, Singapore, London and Cairo.

The Singapore leg, run in tropical heat and humidity, had been the biggest challenge.

Sir Ranulph described the experience as "hell on Earth". Dr Stroud walked much of the way after suffering a stomach upset.

Sir Ranulph has fought back from a heart attack and a double heart bypass operation to carry out his latest test of endurance.

He had already promised to take on the challenge before he collapsed on an aircraft in June and had to undergo surgery.

The pair have also been running with a defibrillator to safeguard Sir Ranulph's health.

All money raised from the Land Rover 7x7x7 Challenge will be given to the British Heart Foundation. They hope to raise a six-figure sum.
