EE has announced that taxis in London and Birmingham are to be equipped with its 4G service to showcase the service's capabilities.
The superfast services, which can offer speeds as high as 50Mbit/s, will be available in 50 cars via a Mi-Fi service that will convert 4G signals from EE into Wi-Fi hotspot that can be accessed via smartphones, tablets and laptops.
The service will be live for three months in 40 cabs in London and 10 in Birmingham that will be covered in the EE branding (pictured above).
The move is an nifty stunt by EE to demonstrate its network and entice customers with the speeds it can offer ahead of rivals O2 and Vodafone coming online with rival services in the coming months.
The recent ending of the auctions, which raised £2.3bn for the UK economy, means that all three operators should be live by the summer with their networks, while Three is likely to follow suit later in the year.
Taxis equipped with Wi-Fi via mobile signals is nothing new, with Transport for London giving the go-ahead to a Tech City start-up called EyeTease to provide connectivity in cars with its CabWifi service, which operators on a similar system.
Last week the firm confirmed it had hit 50 towns and cities across the UK with its service in the five months since it went live.
