thanks

just let it run while you are at work it can take 10 hours depending on disk size and how long ago it was last defragged

Press ctr alt del to bring up that "end program box" close everythink down in there apart from explorer and rundll, should take about 5 hours after that, you have to close them down cause the programs are writting to your HDD perminatly) and if its your first time in ages defraging it will take to long and one will "change the contents of your hard drive..

cheers m8s thanks for reply

will give it a go this weekend and see how i get on.
like u said it might be a case of just leaving it and letting it get on with it.
thanks again

Monkeyspunks, last time I defragged my pc it took 3 days.It was the first programme I ran after starting it up, would the computer still be writing things to the hardrive. It just counts up to 10%,then says "contents changed" and starts again. It rarely states it is actually defragmenting.I was wondering if the programme had gone wrong, what do you advise m8?

What you need is Disk keeper or Norton Utils from my site here There is a facility in Nutils called Speed Disk. This allows you to defrag in no time at all. As pointed out to you earlier, do not have anything else running whilst defragging. Good luck and let me know if this helps.

I would advise to follow these simple instructions once a month, it will keep your hard drive looking, and running gr8.

Firstly empty the trash can, and delete any unwanted files from your pc. (temp files etc)
Then run a basic Scandisk, delete your swap file, this will then prompt you to reboot your computer, when the computer boots up run a full defrag, if its the first time, it may take a while (depending on your system specs etc), once complete re enable the swap file, and reboot. after you have done this its advisabel to just run the old defrag once a week and itl only take about 20 - 30 mins, depending again on your system spec !!!

Hope this helps ! ! !

Speed disc is well sorted in norton utils. It also sorts out your swap file. Also i have found that if your registry isn't cleaned up once in a while this can make defragging tiresome.I once tried norton cleansweep,What a load of tripe.System mechanic seems a much better program and has many other usefull utilities. Bye for now Carl!

i had the same problem mate, what i did was disabled everything from startup got rid of me virus scanner and firewall then heypresto it worked,,,,,, try it..

I agree with monkeyspunks,
close everything down except explorer then run defrag, does it in 1 or 2 hrs.
I have Norton Utilities, but it takes sometimes 10 hrs.so I don't use it for defrag.

Just done a 20gig drive with 3 partitions in just over an hour using Speed disk. The number of files that you have on your drives is also a time factor.

Speccy if you still need web space check http://www.freewebsiteproviders.com/free-personal-t.htm out

Guys, Many thanx for advice, it now works really fast and actually completes the programme. It's amazing how the simplest thing can make such a difference.Happy New Year everyone!

Thanks for tip Monkey. I think that particular site allows space mainly for site and not for storage of bins as such.

Which ever programme you use to defrag you need to turn off your programs that are running back ground one's as well this link will take you to a freeware prog that will turn everthing off with one click off a button I use it it's very good.
