Nah, never bothered with that new fangled stuff.

Used to love my old Akai though. Sold it for silly money on ebay a few years ago.

Do these insert gaps or something? if not why not put the hifi into the computer and convert with soundforge etc?
 
Do You mean, You can convert without a computer?

Or that it comes with the convenience of a usb lead and software?

you can plug it into your car or other devices which accept USB input.
