I might be buying a used Astra Diesel from a local garage.

Would I be within my rights to connect my Can Checker and run Vauxcheck on it while viewing?

Not really mate, unless they have a service department who can plug their own one in?

Also, if you take the RAC with you as well then they can plug theirs in.

But thats not saying you can just take it with you and ask..they might let you.

What reasons would they have for not allowing me to do my own check?

Apart from trying to hide faults.

I just got a reply from the garage, they said I could not do it as the last time they let someone do it they destroyed the ECU.

Sounds like bullshit to me, all you do is connect the lead, press Connect then read the ECU, nothing is written.

My garage let me use mine.. But then again some others were reluctant. Yes, you can screw the ECU by connecting to OBD11 / CAN.

An after thought.. WIll they let you go on an unescorted test drive.. Plug it in then.

Or ask them to run a diagnostic infront of you.

You know you wont screw it up, I know you wont screw it up but you will get someone who just bought a cheapy from ebay and read a little about it and thinking they are an expert.

Im sure they will have an onsite mechanic who would put their own through it or lt RAC do a test on it.

If i was selling my car, i wouldnt let someone stick a diag machine on it unless i knew they were insured just incase they screwed it up.
