Nearly 100 flood warnings are in place across Britain as severe gales and heavy rain lash the country.

Two severe flood warnings are in place at Haydon Bridge on the River Tyne and at Llanrwst in North Wales.

Another 72 flood warnings were alerted by the Environment Agency across England and Wales, with areas worst hit including the North East, North Yorkshire, Cumbria and North Wales.

In Scotland, five severe warnings - three alongside the River Tay - and 20 warnings were made by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.

Many roads were closed as gusts of up to 80mph swept the country.

People are being advised to avoid unnecessary journeys and take extra care when driving.

Gales are expected to continue to affect central and southern Scotland and northern England throughout the day.

Forecasters predict the winds will ease across northern England later on Saturday and the heavy rains will turn into squally showers.

But it is set to remain windy in central and southern Scotland for the next few days.
