The mutilated torso of a 17-year-old British girl has been found in a suitcase beneath a bridge in the Brazilian city of Goiania.

The victim, identified by a distinguishing tattoo as Cara Marie Burke, was killed on Sunday night, according to Jose Maria da Silva of Goiania police.

Officers have today arrested her boyfriend Mohamed D'Ali Carvalho Santos, who allegedly admitted he had killed her and cut off her arms, head and legs.

"After we identified the body, the police initiated a search for the boyfriend," said Mr da Silva told Sky News.

"The police found him today and he confessed to the crime. He didn't show any regret. He was cold. It's a tragedy."

Mr da Silva reported that Mr D'Ali Carvalho Santos had been to a party on the night of the killing.

He added that police were still searching the area around the Meia Ponte bridge for the rest of Ms Burke's remains.

The victim's brother Michael, 32, told Sky News his family had been informed of Cara's death yesterday.

He said his family had not decided whether or not to travel to Brazil, and that all they wanted was for police to find the rest of her body so she could be brought home to them.

The Foreign Office said in a statement: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Goiania in Brazil.

"The body was discovered early on Tuesday.

"Next of kin have been informed and we are providing consular assistance to the family."

Goiania, where Ms Burke's remains were discovered, is the capital and the largest city in the state of Goias, in the central-western region of Brazil.
