Mobile Phones blackberry 9800 safe mode

hi the wifes blackberry 9800 is only booting in safe mode.have took battery out loads of times still the same.the touch screen works but the back key will not work.suspect it may have got slight water damage on holiday.does this mean it is totaly goosed or is there a way round this thanx.

Remove and reinsert the battery.
When the red LED light goes out, press and hold the Escape key as the device is loading.
When the dialog appears, click OK.

also try this........
update firmware* using desktop manager

do not select 3rd party applications when updating
remove micro sd card.

thanx for the reply could not update firmware as it had the latest on it so downgraded firmware 1 step but still in safe mode.took out sd card as well but dont know how to select 3rd party apps.it is not so easy when the back button and the blackberry button does not work.also noticed in blackberry desktop in applications it says required blackberry 6.0.0 system software and blackberry 6.0.0 core applications. dont know if this has anything to do with it or not

sorry meant to ask do you do the upgrade using back up or not .
