AN INTERNATIONAL network pirating digital television channels from across Europe has been taken down by the National Police technological investigation brigade (BIT).

Using a card sharing technique, a single legally acquired card was being used to grant access to thousands of businesses, urbanisations and private homes via the internet.

A total of 57 interconnected internet servers around the EU were being used, 25 of which were based around Spain, including in Alicante and Murcia.

Sharing 1 card and distributing to expats in spain has been around for more than a decade and evolved many years before cardsharing existed. In the late nineties people were paying for a subscription then broadcasting it across urbanisations for other english to watch. This grew when the spanish mafia invested heavily in the early part of the noughties. Re-broadcasting english channels boomed, as did the exodus of english expats. They have been uncontrollable and expanding ever since.
Cardshare came well after all this, but yes it is very popular as its harder to combat. The bigger CS crime issue is really in the UK where official subscriptions are not being sold. Those in Spain can't legally subscribe to the uk channels so there is no accountable loss. I dont think it is fair to blame expats for killing the CS hobby lol.

nah im not balming expats m8 lol, but the big commercial CS servers, hosting one or two cards then selling access to a few hundred people

like you said, its been around for years and years, but now its getting more common for people to sub to, instead of actually sharing, and its being done within the UK for UK providors, the broadcasters will now up their game and actively target their own cards to combat it, its just a matter of time before its all comes to an end :(

I remember reading an article in IIRC WhatSat about piracy in Spain. It was a real eye opener and much worse than anything in the UK. It's a drop in the ocean though, there are thousands of setups, they even have private microwave transmitters that re-broadcast paytv locally. :)
