Kaveh Golestan, a BBC cameraman, was killed in Iraq on Wednesday after stepping on a mine.

The incident occurred in the town of Kifri, located in the southern part of Kurdish-controlled Iraq. Golestan, a fifty-two year old Iranian, was killed instantly. He had worked for the BBC as a freelance for around three years, the corporation said. The Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer leaves a wife and a nineteen-year old son.

Richard Sambrook, the BBC's director of news, said: "Kaveh Golestan was an outstanding photojournalist who had worked in support of freedom of expression in his native Iran and elsewhere and was well known to many western news organisations.

"He had worked with the BBC for many years.

"Our deepest sympathy goes to his family and friends.

"This once again underlines the dangers faced by news teams covering the war in Iraq."

Producer Stuart Hughes was caught by the blast from the mine and has injured his foot. Hughes has been taken to the American Military Hospital in Sulaymaniya for treatment. Correspondent Jim Muir and the local translator, who were travelling with Golestan and Hughes, were unharmed.
