The one-year-old, whose name has not been released, was hit by the streetlight in Chiswick on Tuesday.

A 62-year-old woman who suffered a back injury was also taken to hospital but later discharged.

The boy was taken by air ambulance to the Royal London Hospital, in east London, soon after the incident but has now been pronounced dead.

Police at the scene

A Scotland Yard spokesman said a post-mortem examination was set to be scheduled.

The injured woman was not related to the baby and had not been pushing his pram when the lamppost fell.

The child had been with a carer, who was not hurt, police said.

The incident, at the junction of Heathfield Terrace and Sutton Court Road, is being investigated by Hounslow CID and the Specialist Crime Directorate jointly with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

A Hounslow council spokeswoman said the death was "an awful tragedy" and the council was co-operating fully with the police and HSE investigations.

She said work was being carried out in the area as part of the Turnham Green traffic and transport improvement scheme, designed to provide faster bus journeys.

She said no contractors were on-site when the lamppost fell.

Thats so sad, I feel sorry for the parents.

The city has gone to shits, they diggin up the road everywhere these days it's a joke. The council and the contractor should be held responsible.
