Actor Peter Ustinov dies
From correspondents in the United Nations
March 30, 2004
UN officials today hailed the work of the late Peter Ustinov, who used his wit and acclaim as actor and film star to spread the goodwill message of the United Nations.

Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised the work of Ustinov, who died in Switzerland today aged 82 after a remarkable career that included 35 years of service as an ambassador for the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).
"Sir Peter's exceptional wit, intelligence and creativity were fully matched by his compassion, conscience and character," Annan's spokesman said in a statement.
"Not only did his talents bring joy to millions of people - he served UNICEF with dedication and distinction for more than three decades to bring attention to the needs of children everywhere."
Annan "joins his admirers around the world in giving thanks for the life of this incurable optimist, remarkable world citizen, and steadfast friend of the United Nations".

Ustinov was "one of UNICEF's most effective and beloved partners, a man who exemplified the idea that one person can make a world of difference", said UNICEF director Carol Bellamy.
"The children of the world have lost a true friend," she said.
Born in between the world wars with a mixed French, German, Italian and Russian ancestry, Ustinov often said he had "automatic loyalty to something like the United Nations".
He was appointed a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF in 1968 and travelled the globe lobbying governments to respect the rights of children. UNICEF said it raised hundreds of millions of dollars through his work.
Films were made of his 1986 visit to child health centres in China and his 1993 tour of hospitals and shelters in Russia, which UNICEF said "alerted millions" to the plight of children in those countries.
