Although lots of motherboards can take the Athlon XP processor, the BIOS will need to be flashed with an updated BIOS image before the system can be booted successfully (As I found out LOL)

The catch is that the board must be booted up to the point where you can use a system disk to get a DOS prompt to run the flash utility or it just hangs

So make sure you have a processor to hand which the board will support...just to boot it

I am in the process of building my third machine at the moment. I am buying a part at a time as the money flow allows. I bought a Giga GA-7DX a few weeks ago and this morning I ordered an AMD 1700XP over the net from Planet Micro. Can you forsee any clashes when it comes to introducing these two components together?

I have just built my self a new pc using a gigabyte GA-7VTXE (Dual Bios) mother board complete with athalon XP 1700 Processor.

I can personally say I had no real probs ....

regards Taff

Sorry guys, I should have eXPlained a little more...

Some MBs will run the XP chip OK (If they are new and specifically support it), some run it as a normal Athlon and some like the Asus A7M 266
(V 1004A and older) won't run it at all until the BIOS is flashed.

Grille your supplier for info 'cos I wouldn't want anyone to be as dissapointed as I was when it wouldn't boot...OK now though...
