The planned reconstruction of the SPL to 10 teams came under wide criticism from fans and club officials alike, leading to potential a rethink on the plans by SPL chief executive Neil Doncaster.

All 12 current SPL clubs were due to vote on the idea at the meeting, and no formal resolution has been agreed.

Doncaster and SPL chairman Ralph Topping had hoped that the clubs would back the changes that would have been implemented the season after next.

In order for the vote to have taken place, a formal resolution had to be put the clubs 14 days prior to the meeting; this has not happened and the vote can now not go ahead.

One SPL chairman told BBC Scotland: “There is no resolution so there is nothing to vote on.”

Dundee United, Hearts, Inverness Caley Thistle and Kilmarnock had all voiced concerns and disapproval of the 10-team proposal, while St Mirren stated their desire for a 14-team league.

Doncaster and Topping held emergency talks with Dundee United’s rebellious chairman Stephen Thompson at Gleneagles on Saturday, with the aim of trying to change his point of view. The outcome of these talks has not yet been made clear.

The meeting on the reconstruction of the SPL will still go ahead on 17th January, but no vote will take place.

Was never going to happen. Too many teams with a lot to lose if relegated.
