In 1,000 days Microsoft will pull the plug on the operating system which it released back in 2001 and that still dominates the OS market.

The aging platform is already a decade old, almost, and will still pile up another three years, but come 2014, the Redmond company will discontinue all support for Windows XP.

XP is even now running on what some might interpret as borrowed time, since the software giant already retired Mainstream Support for the operating system.

On April 8, 2014, Microsoft will also no longer provide Extended Support for XP, which gives users little chance but to make the jump to another OS.

“On April 8, 2014, security patches and hotfixes for all versions of Windows XP will no longer be available. So bottom line, PC’s running Windows XP will be vulnerable to security threats,” revealed Microsoft’s Stephen L Rose.

“Furthermore, many third party software providers are not planning to extend support for their applications running on Windows XP, which translates to even more complexity, security risks, and ultimately, added management costs for your IT department if you’re still managing Windows XP environments.”

End of support is nothing short of a death sentence for XP. Make no mistake about it, XP can be considered obsolete even today, despite the fact that it’s still undisputed king of the OS market.

My personal prediction is that XP will lose its crown soon enough, even ahead of Windows 8’s launch, to Windows 7.

For those users that want to stick to Windows, the only viable alternative to XP for the time being is Windows 7. Even by the most optimistic estimates, Windows 8, the next major iteration of Windows, is approximately a year away.

Service Pack 3 (SP3) was the last upgrade provided to 32-bit (x86) XP, and similarly, SP2 was the last for 64-bit (x64) flavor of the platform. Microsoft will no longer release any additional service packs for Windows XP.

there must be millions of copies out there legal one so they should keep supporting it, at the end of the day they made it so popular so its only fair they look after it.

My main pc and netbook run xp :( i know its 2 years away but hopefully both will still be working by then

This has got to be bollox and cause problems and I will certainly will not be happy loads of people love xp pro.

There asking for trouble and when you buy an original xp pro disk,It doesnt say you have 1000 days of life, I dont think this will ever happen but I could be wrong.

B@stards what about net books and pads like my sammy NC10 that are not powerfull enough to run windows 7 its only 2 year old this is shocking.

Those netbooks will be well and truly packed in in three years time when XP support stops. Anyway they're only stopping support, it won't just stop working.

This has been known for years. MS have already extended support for XP but 2014 will be it unless you want to pay $$$ for continued hotfix support. This timeline BTW is for hotfixes, it does not mean the O/S will stop working but if a new security issue is found or new application breaks then tough luck. Also don't forget that MS have already stopped developing for XP, IE9, Security Essentials V2 and Windows Live 2011 are all Vista or above and the trend will only continue.

As for netbooks, not sure what spec your NC10 is but I have a HP 210 with a N450 CPU with 2GB RAM and its running Win7 HP no problem. I also have a P4M laptop (1.25GB RAM) and a P4 Dell GX 260 (1GB RAM) desktop all running Win7 without issues. Not lighting fast but OK for general purpose usage and each of these are over 5 years old.

We are talking 3 years away still so I would think that most of you will have replaced hardware that is already 5 years old now by then.

They ought to keep supporting XP and ditch Vista instead, maybe given time people will forget it ever existed....

yh id reckon they should stop vista as its carp xp is a bit old but lots of people still love useing it i myself use to love xp untill windows 7 came out....i think windows 7 is the best so far tho...
