I think there might be some confusion here between the WD TV Play and the WD TV Live.

I don't think the Play has a USB connection. The Live does.

WD TV Play

Description does, was surprised myself!

- Wirelessly streaming the latest movies, hit TV shows, trending videos and chart-topping music
- Enjoying your vacation photos and home videos in Full-HD 1080p on the biggest screen in the house
- Viewing media from a USB hard drive, camcorder or digital camera
- Using your smartphone or tablet as a remote control to access your favorite entertainment
- Connecting a Slingbox® to enjoy live TV on any TV in the house or away
- Adding entertainment apps to any TV

WDTV Live has 2 USB ports (1 front 1 Back) The big difference is that the WDTV Play is really centered around internet apps and services and you can only stream from attached storage or from a media server and cannot play meg2 video and has no DTS Audio

The live can play most files from attached storage and network drives via media server or network shares. It can also play DVD iso image files with menus

In my Opinion the WDTV Live is the better option but more expensive

WD have put together a nice chart for those wanting to compare the 3 models of their TV media players: Media Players Overview

To be honest I think the Play is aimed more at those who would be looking at Roku's offerings, rather than a more rounded media player. It's got similar specs to the discontinued Roku 2 XS and new Roku 3, but at less than Roku LT prices (at least in some places).

Hmmmm no DTS :(

gonna a give this to my mum as a prezzie, still a great price though :)

Also, can I plug a USB powered External drive into this ????

If you've got a receiver, it'll do passthrough over HDMI and SPDIF.

If it works off a single USB port, it should be fine. However, there are some drives/caddies that use 2 USB leads because they need more power - these are unlikely to work on the WD TV Play.
