Just got me new router today (shame that the switches and that are not here) So just flashed DD-WRT to it and what a nice piece of kit and that it is, nice and fast and the like, (got used to take ages on the old linksys that had DD-WRT on it )

so turning the virmin router/modem back into a modem and then going to use this as the DHCP sever and the like, it's got FTP and all sorts built into the "DD-WRT Build" Happy Days!

I'll get "opendns" and the like and the ports opened and stuff for various devices, all good so far though!

Awesome! Something worked. !

How much was it mate? I was thinking of giving the ol' virmin superhub the boot and using it as a modem with a better router

£41.00 quid all in, came with a american/jap plug one of them converters that's my only gripe...lol!

It's mint man, much better speeds via wi-fi than the virmin one I admit like, and not to mention that you have all the lovely DD-WRT settings on it, it's got a USB port as well for sharing and adding devices via USB so means you could if you want to set up and FTP straight to the back of the netgear.

Can't fault it at the minute and of course I was due an upgrade, LAN, WAN and router.

Well pleased with it.

Need any help then just give me a shout like.

Oh and not to mention that opening the odd port and that of course is a breeze now, (adding static IP addresses to the devices them selves as well some thing that you need to do in the virmin hub rather than on the device I've found out) also adding OpenDns and the like, easy now I'm back on familiar ground.

Flashed with a boot file to unlock it and then the bin file with the big build in it. dead easy.

whats that openDNS all about like dibs mate, what do you use it for!!

OpenDNS effectively uses public DNS servers as opposed to the one provided by your ISP, but it has a higher level of security and features.

I've used it for years simply because I can also control/filter content.

Just replace your DNS servers with: 208.67.220.220 & 208.67.222.222

If you want to do more register on their site.

instead of your pc going to normal DNS settings that your ISP provides, you point it to go via OpenDns and you get So you traffic comes in via them.....it's mainly probably used for when you want to stop content making it to your network, so you can (if you want to) filter out pron and the likes of that, it's dead handy for kids and the like, you simply configure it so that the content is blocked, means that what ever device is connected to your modem/router then they simply can't get to it.

also comes in handy for the following.

Industry leading malware and botnet protection
Award winning Web filtering
Faster, reliable, more secure DNS
Ultra-reliable, globally distributed cloud network
Simple, Smart, Easy

There's a couple of screen shots from it for you.

can also be used as a dns service for your server ;)

Yip forgot to mention that as well......

Scratch that, it would seem that the router with DD-WRT has terrible through port speeds, class, some thing that I just didn't want to read, looks like I'll have to go to tomato or back to the stock firmware that came with it.

Lots more features, lots less performance.

Funny how Netgear actually want you to put open source on it but there own firmware is better, how ever if I've gone this far then there's no point having CFW on a router that's got bad bandwidth on the wan and the lan.....

yeah mint isn't it......just my luck, just going to leave it as it is and have a play rather than a re-flash of firmware back to stock.

Just waiting for these dam switches to surfice and then I can get the rest of the network sorted.

do you get full N speed with ddwrt - alot of threads on DDWRT forum about not getting full N speed - as with my three ddwrt routers (all DLInk DIR-615D) I manage to get only 72 Mbps.

I'll have a look but think not, maybe around about 54mbps..... bit gutted really as I liked DD-WRT (but been advised there may be some other flaws in it) I think i'm going to go back to stock when I get home and see what the score is with it, but if the bandwidth via LAN/WAN is rubbish (as per them screen shots) and is up and down like a brides nighty then I might as well go back to stock.

(I was looking at Tomato and very familar with the layout, like haxor!) but I know I can go back to stock from telent into the router and doing it that way TFTP, but with tomato there isn't any talk of going back to stock, they say to put tomato on that you should put the small dd-wrt file on 1st and then upgarde.

Think i'll be happy with the netgear firmware on as them over at DD-WRT haven't replied to me.

Thanks mate
