My neighbour has handed me a PS3 which took the 2.70 update during the week and hasn't powered up since.

When I press the power button it turns green then very briefly flashes yellow then red and makes 3 bleeps.

Will it need to go back to Sony or can it be repaired DIY ala Xbox360 RROD?

What sort of warranty do Sony offer on the PS3, I reckon this box is about 3 years old.

Diddy replied here with fix: https://www.digitalworldz.co.uk/posts/1510334/

Uh-oh its the YLOD m8 its happened to me, but i got mine replaced with a refurbished model free of charge .But they have now since stopped this (luckily mine went less than 2 months before this)
Its the same as the US now m8 you need to pay around £150 to get it sorted through Sony, not sure if there is a DIY fix too.
Now when this happened to me i was frantically googling to try and find the problem, before i remembered about the returns service and it seems to indiacte a hardware fault is what i found.
Now hardware could be anything lol from the Blu ray drive to something on the mobo lol, so only option it looks like is returning it to Sony.

they will still replace most ps3's for free. its only the original 60gb ps3 that they charge to replace.

if its a 60gb, take out sonys continous play for a couple of weeks then phone them, they will send out a replacement asap. will cost less than £10 to take continous play, instead of £150 that they charge normally

Just been reading on another forum that Sony has now decided it will replace faulty/out of warranty PS3's and PSP's (even with a broken LCD screen).

The only thing they ask is the warranty sticker is still intact.

Tele. Sony UK 0870 5998877

Not tried it myself not got one but if anyone needs to, give it a whirl.

Here ya go witchy looks quite involved though, but i suppose if sony aint fixing it.....It needs heat gun treatment aka the "360" treatment.

Thanks mate, that looks easy enough, infact I nominate your tutorial for a place in the Stickies!

@ Lambs neck...

I'll tell him to contact Sony 1st, if they want cash then I'll give the DIY repair a try.

np m8 let us know how he gets on just for futur referance and watch the price of faulty units on fleebay go up in price lol

This actually works! :)

I've just fixed the YLOD using the tutorial that Diddy posted.

The hardest part is stripping and rebuilding the beast.

just did the reflow and the ps3 wont switch on it looks like there is no power at all no light etc. does anyone know what i could have done ?
Thanks

It's not him that's being a di** mate, to be fair you asked a stupid question on a public forum and you got a sarcastic if truthful answer from someone, what more do you want ?! And you call him a di** lol that's a good 'un!

New to these parts by the way, first post in a 7 month old thread but it's all new to me and I had something to say so I said it. Because it's right.
