I dont think its the firmware you update mate. Should auto-update to allow you to play divx. Not entirely sure though. I am guessing your getting issues, I know from experience, that the 360 will not play all divx files. You will probably need to convert, as some need codecs.

thanks

thanks for the reply janobi the only reason i ask is i have not had it online yet and was wondering if the firmware updates to let it play divx when it goes online

Yes it does. When you will try to play a divx file while online, it will ask you to update. You will need a mem card or hard drive to store the update files. Just follow the instructions from there.

Cheers

thanks

thanks KhuramG

thats exactly what i wanted to know

im a bit thick but

can i use dvd+rw in it aswell

Playing AVI DIVX XVID files on your 360

Now I only use my games console for playing games as a rule because I figure why shorten the life of the laser by playing movies from the drive when you can buy a dvd player for a tenner? ;) lol... I dont need to stream anything as I would normally view it directly from my laptop and this connects via hdmi to my tv so I've no need for streaming....

Anyway I thought I would put things to the test for you as I've never even bothered downloading the codecs myself so I thought now is as good a time as any and gave it a go.... Heres exactly all I had to do to play my avi...

I simply placed a small avi on to both a usb flash drive and a disc (the trailer for the new hulk film) for testing purposes. I signed in to xboxlive and inserted my flash drive... From the dash I selected the media blade and on this blade I selected videos. From here I had to press the x button on my game controller to select change video source. When I done that I then selected portable device(which was my usb flash drive but you can also select from current disc if thats the location of your avi). I had a few folders appear and selected the one which contained the avi...I selected it and then got the message that I needed to apply an update so I selected ok and it took me directly to the update page on xboxlive(optional media I think it was) and then took the update...my avi then started to play :)

Very easy to do and took me less than 2 minutes :)

yea it worked

did the same logged into live then went to play file and it asked to download codec - a lot easier than i thought .......
just have to figure out how to load avi files onto the 120gb hard drive that only has some demo's and my profile on it lol

or get a usb stick

by the way the disc was pretty noisey when i started playing the avi files but once it was playing i paused the film and then resumed after about 10 seconds and there was no noise out of the tray at all

LOL...glad you sorted it mate... told you it was easy :)

You'll need to forget about transferring any avi files to your 360 hard drive though mate because it isn't possible :(

You'll find a lot of discs seem to spin up noisy but they usually settle down on their own mate.

thanks

cheers mxwizard

looks like a usb stick it is then and a new dvd rom

well the missus is gonna be amused lol

Good news is that the sticks are becoming bigger and bigger in terms of memory size and its so damn easy to just drop files on to. Great for sticking small stuff on but in terms of movies I think I'll just stick to discs in a ten quid dvd player lol. I bought a yamada dvd player from svp a year or so ago and it played absolutely everything I threw at and then some lol It even played some obscure files that a few pc media players even rejected lol.

And as for the missus mate...what can I say? lol... They're never amused when it comes to spending the pennies but they're always happy to sit back and enjoy the benefits mate :) lol

Mate, Also consider external USB HDD - it also works!! :)

Another valid source KhuramG (cheers for that) :) I wasn't overlooking it and I'm sure it was also listed in the links I posted above but I didn't have one at hand when I come to doing my test lol.

Just remember that if you're using the HDD then its probably better to format it with Mac Drive if you're wanting to use anything over 4gb in size ;)
