Hi All

Getting sick of using torrents and want to look into Newsgroups. Been reading up and it seems you need to download a 'header' as in torrents and i will be using Newzbin for this. To donload will be using Newsleecher.

Can anyone recommend a cheap reliable provider for games/films ?

Thanks.

Also in Newzbin the only way to search for things ? Still slightly confused by it all.

Just to get you started, check if your ISP may have a news server...

I.e. VM have a few binary groups but retention is low (10 days max IIRC). BT lease their news servers from giganews, so you get 'free' full access to their european servers but speed seems to be limited (I occationally get 1.8MB/s, but usually top out at ~1.3MB/s).

I use Usenet.net. I think the latest deal is $8.99 (£4.50) per month for 5 connections unlimited downloads.

You'll get 100 day retention from them too.

As far as downloads go, your better to search nzb matrix or the likes. If you donate $10 to nzb matrix, you'll get 120 day retention and everything I've ever got form there and downloaded through the usenet servers have benn complete with pars (I.e I haven't had to go searching for pars to fix the download)

Well worth the money IMO.

PS: I use newsleecher to download.

ngroups.net for me, approx £36 for 6 months unlimited and 100 day retention with 12 connections allowed. But I may look into usenet, didnt know it was that cheap.

i use astraweb 110 + days retention, 20 connections unlimited downloads and all for about £8 a month and i max out my 20 meg connection

a quick search would have come up with a thread that cant be more than a few weeks old, and i,ll tell you the majority all went for Ngroups in that thread, cheap reliable and paypal payments.

I signed up for Ngroups during the Oktoberfest promotion. I had loads of problems and ended up going back to UsenetServer. Everyone else seems to have been lucky and had no problems with ngroups though, might just be me!

Iv never got the idea of newsgroups has anyone got time to explain it to me?

newsdemon - I get 2200k d/l via virgin between 12am and 4pm

So all these sites that list the .nzb files, what happens if one has it and one has not and the item you want is on the hosting site ?

Also do you have to pay for the Newzbin sites ?

Ta

Think i will go with Usenet myself, just need above answering.

Cheers guys

Newzbin costs me 25p a week. I just factor in the extra £1 a month on top of my Newsgroup access. The site has never let me down, and for that I'm happy to pay.

I used to use Astraweb pay by downloads as opposed to a fixed monthly fee. Essentially this means that you get 90g worth of downloads for circa £12.50 and you can take as long as you want to download your data quota - you can top up at your leisure. Retention is pretty good to, and they have both european and us based servers so you should max out your connection speed.

I now use giganews mainly due to its retention (200 days) and SSL downloads, but this is a much more expensive solution - circa £15 per month.

Newsleecher is the way to go, their supersearch engine is fantastic. I would also recommend you join Newzbin (http://v3.newzbin.com/) as they provide a great newsgroup indexing service.

Ngroups.Net - I've been with them all and I find Ngroups the cheapest and most reliable, it's about £8 a month for unlimited access which will max out your modem speed and they even (unofficially) support multiple IP logins ;)

I use Giganews, I have used Usenet for about 12 years, so I have used a fair amount of them and none has been as good as Giganews. I would advise not to go with Thundernews.com. I had a "Unlimited" downloads account with them and half way threw the first month it got cut off because it was over quota. Also giganews has a 200 day retention. Giganews is extremely fast as well, I get full 20mb constantly with 10 connections. Only problem is they dont support multiply IPs connected at the same time as Ngroups.net does. Best thing to do is go around trying them all, most of them give you a free trial. Giganews does a 3 day free trial with 10GB cap.

Cheers guys all up and running. One more question though.
I have selected a folder to put all downloads in, when i am d/loading multiple items, ie couple of films, how will i differentiate between them ?

Will there be just a big jumble of films ? How do you go about it, ising Newsleecher.

Thanks

I don't bother with downloading headers, some do but i just tend to check nzb sites to see whats available.
When you are downloading, it will put them into the folder from the group you have downloaded from. like a.b.movies. If you should have more than 1 in there they will be named. Only thing i do is a bit of housekeeping, extract all the files then delete the rars so your only left with the films themselves otherwise your hd will soon fill up.
Don't use newsleecher myself so not sure how that works.
