I found an easy way to transfer files from PC to PS3 if your PS3 is connected to the net via a router.

1. Download the following File, and install

2.Once installation is complete run the Red Kawa File Server.

3. Note the web address underneath where it says File Server Active

4.Type the address your Internet browser window and once loaded click on settings.

5. Type in folder(s) of the computers you want to be able to transfer from and you can also put the starting directory to be displayed.

6. Goto your PS3 Net Browser and type in the address from step 3. (once loaded you can press Select and chose add to Bookmarks for future access)

7.Browse to the files you want to upload and press x and chose the destination as Hard Disk and click Start.

8. Exit the browser and goto the relevant folder on your PS3 (Music, Photo Etc.) and access your file: multi :

Nice, saves me messing around with my sd card or usb stick

No problems mate, only thing is you can only do 1 file at a time.

can you play any video files using this method?

Heres a list of files supported, ain't tried any yet, im only using file server for photos and music so far.
