Hi all, does anyone here cycle much?
I ask because I have read many conflicting reports on methods for losing weight.
One is obviously cycle lots, eat less.
The other is specific to cadence - it suggests using a lighter gear, therefore pedalling more will be better than using a higher gear , pushing harder.
Does anyone have any help for a n old overweight man?

I cycle a lot, mainly do it for pleasure so can't really answer your question but the added benefits are, like you say losing weight, getting fit etc.
If you're on facebook then there's a group called "cycling advice and tips"(bike bible)where you'll find lots of info on the subject.
Or have a look at Global Cycling Network videos on YouTube

Thanks for the reply, some of those videos look very interesting.
My problem is I seem to bulk up while cycling and keep my gut :)
I love my cycling, and just hope to get the fringe benefits too.
As it's my only form of exercise, I feel I am getting fitter, but now just hope to lose some pounds too.

Do be careful. My o/h wanted to lose weight so as not to be "40 and fat". Started doing exercise & diet and got hooked on it. Seriously. Lost almost 5st. (30-odd kg) in less than a year and looked terrible. Still cannot eat properly.
Cycling was one of the culprits, at the worst time he was doing up to 100 km a day, and actually wore a bike out! Not so bad now, but gets into a serious strop if weather prevents the daily 'fix'. So it's safe to say cycling works (it was the pedalling hard type- only cyclist I know who actually looks for hills lol!) but take care not to let it take over.

Edit: To put that weight loss into context, start weight was 13 ½ stone, and went down to less than 8!

It is silverdale,it's a Rhino F8,to celebrate Froomey's TdF win

Jesus thats worth more than my car..infact both mine and my son's car. I have a Specialized Roubaix Pro. Just upgraded all the groupset to dura ace 7900 but it's not a patch on that of yours. Thats one bit er nice kit you got there oily, it would be wasted on the likes of me. @trev, some weight loss that, 13 1/2 st to 8st ..ffs, it's hard to lose weight when your not a huge guy and 13 1/2 aint huge.

I agree, cycling can take over your life and like you said missing the "fix" is like a steg head missing the gym. The more you do the longer it takes and it becomes so time consuming it's scary. I got a mountain bike to brake it up and use that now for the odd 10-15 mile ride just to keep the legs going but i'm not getting any younger.
Gotta admit though, it's the best thing you can do for your health, weight and I find, mental state. Combine it with some kind of healthy eating (cutting the crap out) and the pounds will drop off.

But wheelo01 ? if your thinking of a bike like oilys don't tell the missus and get your house re-mortgaged :) :)

Frameset from the states, wheels I already had(Shimano WH7900 C50's)and I managed to get a second hand Di2 Ultegra groupset of fleabay for £565.Built it all up myself and to be honest I don't do it any justice

I have a bike already and do an amount of cycling, I just want to actually lose a few pounds ( we'll probably a stone or possibly two), so I know I have to change my plan somehow.
My bike us a canyon ultimate AL with a campagnola groupset.

I don't think it'll take over my life.

respect ya bike guys and the miles go smoother ;)

Got up this morning to go out on the road bike at sunrise and it started to rain. Normally I'd brave it till I went to put some crap in the bins and skated there on one foot. It's that cold it's instant ice.

Bikes in the house, brew in hand, those road marking are unforgiving when their iced up

Far to eager silverdale

I looked at my garmin I haven't been since 21st December,I dont think so :)

I use to have one but there's no room at mine were I can leave it set up so I got rid.
This is the worse part about cycling, once you leave it for a while those first few weeks back in the saddle are non-enjoyable, in fact there horrid and painful.
