What exactly do you want to know ?

ECM's (Entitlement control messages) are periodic messages (8 seconds) which pass the present de-mangle keys for the dvb-csa (common scrambling algorithm) mangler. Csa is the common baseline data scrambler used on dvb systems. All other encryptions systems (NDS, Via, Seca etc) fit on top of csa and use some form of periodic ECM for timely delivery of the required keys.

In Nagra the ECM's are DES encrypted using a 56 bit DES key. These are called the operational keys and are the things that are currently causing so much problem. Nagra uses two of these keys, key0 and key1. Only one key is active at any one time and its called the active key. Having two keys allows the supplier to change the non-active key without interfering with video decryption. When the supplier is confident that most cards will of accepted a new non-active key they can flip the non-active to be the active.

ECM's tend to hold only messages of short duration value. Whilst 56 bit DES is secure in the short time it is possible to crack it given sufficient processing power and time.

As an aside, once a card decrypts an ECM it needs to pass the information to the stb. Passing the unencrypted CSA keys to the box would be a bad idea as it would allow one card to be used to de-scramble many boxes. The solution is to re-encrypt the message using another DES key known only to the stb and the card. This DES key is called the boxkey !

Emm's (Entitlement management messages) are the much more secure as they use a variation of multi 512 bit RSA public key cryptography. This is effectively uncrackable. Emm's are used to send messages to cards concerning subscriptions. ie entitlement tier updates etc. They are also used to send operational key updates (the DES decrypt keys) to the cards.

You may wonder why everthing isn't just decrypted using the very secure RSA algorithms. Well, RSA is very computationally expensive. Relatively speaking it takes a long time to both encrypt and decrypt messages. DES, on the other hand, is fairly secure but computationally easy and relatively fast.

absolutely 100% BRILLIANT, thank you so much for taking the time to explain it everything now seems much clearer.

Great news thanks cant wait to give it a go

get a network cross over cable, couple of quid from ebay

also make sure you set your PC's IP to static to be on the same subnet as the Dreambox - not required if using a DHCP server.

would a ethernet cable work, regarding the IP status not idea what you mean by that, might need help once this has come out.

max,

has to be a 'cross over' ethernet cable - means it can go point to point rather than through a router/switch.

Static IP - look at what the IP of the dreambox is 192.168.xxx.xxx
set your PC IP to be 192.168.xxx.xxx+1

then when you ftp to the box you should be good

any local Pc store should have cross over...if you want to pay a premium go to the purple shirts

no, you need a crossover cable or adapter, they are cheap on fleabay

get or change the dreamboxes IP in setup / expert setup / communications settings , with the remote control

connect with the crossover cable, start your ftp and use the IP address you got/put in your box

and you should be in . . .

regarding the ip status dont understand alot about FTP, would it be best to wait for this to come out and then ask questions about how to link up.

you could wait till you get a cross over cable.

that cable between your laptop and the dreambox will help you a lot, sometimes it is easier to understand what you are doing when you are doing it.

when you have the hardware you simply want to match the IP of your PC to the IP of your dreambox Expert SEtup>Comms>

make sure that they are not identical but one has the last number 1 higher than the other

that is Dreambox = 192.168.1.198 PC = 192.168.1.199

easy

Its been said alot this week i know ;-)

But People who haven't donated for VIP,Really should think about doing so now.

I aint a regular poster, but giving a bit helps things like this be available.

Or is it going to be VIP only?

P.S. for the post and info.

can i ask if a new emu is released what it to say that vm do not change the way the keys autoroll again hence rendering the new emu useless .... i am only saying this because there was a link to an article on another forum i cant find it at the min to post here. it said basically vm were going to change the way the key rolled more frequently rendering the boxes we all know and love useless to recieve pay tv hence vm winning this longstanding battle against us all.

i am not sure how true this is and anyway if it is true i dont see how vm have won because if the worst does come to the wors we can manually change the keys i know it is a paoin in the ass but it is possible so meaning vm havent won aginst us all. i also thaught hoiw many different wayc can they change the autorool before they run out of new ways.
i am not sure how much money it cost vm to make and change the ways the auto roll works but surely they cant afford to change it that many times yes they can change the keys but the entire way in which it rolls i think that is a bit far fetched as it must be a costly task to have the ways change and also the testing to make sure their own "legit" boxes can cope with what thay are doing.

i rememember when they did a thing like this before i then had a starview and it took almost a week to release new firmware so the autoroll worked again so maybe this is just one of them times where it is going to happen more frequently untill all the great guys working on this problem get it sorted in some way or another.

Also . Please remember that is will only be at BETA release .. maybe a few things to smooth out .

Still , Im looking forward to giving it a try when it comes out .

There is only so much Barney DVD'd I can watch .. Bring back Playhouse Disney

:)

Cheers

its a long 24hrs, its taking forever.

It's probably best if we all just wait patiently. I’m sure the coders are under enough stress without us adding to it. Also, I’m sure we would all prefer a more stable & hopefully close to permanent fix, rather than a rushed job. This can only be achieved by giving the coder(s) adequate time.

I’m sure it will be well advertised once, the wonderful, fix is released. Thanks again to those who are putting in such a huge effort for all of us. It is greatly appreciated.

well it doesnt matter how long it takes lets be greatful somebody or some people are taking time out to do it.
