A one-year-old boy has died after being attacked by a dog at a relative's home in Wakefield.
The child was in the yard of the property when the family pet, a Rottweiler, launched the attack.

The boy was taken to Pinderfields General Hospital with serious injuries but later died.

A post-mortem examination will take place today.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said they received an emergency call at 3.30pm on Friday.

He said: "Police officers attended and the dog was destroyed in order to ensure the safety of others at the address."

The boy's family was being supported by specially-trained officers, he added.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said paramedics were called to the scene at 3.29pm.

Police said they would not yet disclose the address where the attack happened because investigations were continuing.

i have a rottie and he is the softest dog i have ever had and i have had loads of different types

too many people are getting these dogs for guard dogs which is ok but if or child gets near them then its very dangerous

if the dog escapes their guarding area and comes into the family home then you can see trouble too

but this is very common too if you teach your dog to fight and give it raw meat and i can tell you i have seen this myself with someone i reported a while back the dog will turn on someone in the family as you are screwing up his/her head man

its about time the government start taking drastic measures and hand out a hell of a lot of time in prison for these ass holes

it sadens me when they take it out on the breed when its nothing to do with them

you can get away with rape, stealing, murder, and fook knows what else and not do time m8, do you really think theyll lock someone up for having a dangerous dog? not a chance, more chance of being thrown in the nick for speeding past an empty motorway service station or taxing your car 3 days late

if they can lock you up for using a phone or sat nav whilst driving, you never know what they'll lock you up for.

Let's not forget that a child is dead here. I don't think the thread should be sidetracked into political/civil liberty issues.

I have owned & bred english bull terriers & dobermans for many years & only ever had one bull terrier go physco - which i can assure you is not a nice thing at all - it took 2 of us fully grown 15 & 13 stone men to get control of her - she was nine months old! whilst the vet injected her.
When i felt her going & limp & felt her take her last breath i was gutted along with my family.
But i can assure you that you make a big mistake when you say that any dog is a pet - remember they are all derived from the wolf - wild animals & JUST BECAUSE THEY LET US DOMESTICATE THEM! does not mean that they do not still have there wild ways inside them.
I still have a 4 year old bitch & 5 year old dog ( who is the softest thing on earth with the three grandchildren) dobes - but i would never leave the kids alone with (him / her) or them.
When you aquire a dog (PET FOR YOUR KIDS) remember to be with them at all times - otherwise you have to suffer the circumstances if or something goes wrong.

not a nice thing to say because of the circumstances but the gov will find a way to make some money out of it. tax or licenses or both and yet again it screws the decent owners over for the actions of people who have no idea about dogs.

it might be a good idea but the chavs/idiots wont pay the tax or get a lisense if the laws passed so good owners pay for there mistakes, same thing happened with the gun laws.

ah, its a shame something like this happend to a little on at christmas.

the parents must be going spare.

you shouldnt keep dogs like this when there is kids about, tey turn dead quick into evil bastards at the drop of a hat.

my family has had dogs since the 1960 and nearly 48 years later we have had not one attack in our family or anyone else

yes no-one should expect a dog to baby sit for you as that is the owners fault

the baby who died its very sad indeed but there must be something in it must keep an eye on the news for updates i think as it dont sound right at all

no it aint a typical repsonse son, im just saying its a shame for this to happen at xmas to a little one.

i aint your son, and you wasnt saying that at all you was saying it about dogs, if you was on about it being a shame for this to happen at xmas then that line would have been in your post and not the other remark. if thats what you was trying to say then fair do's to you but thats not how the post reads.

yes, its the death of the kid thats the shame.

no, not all dogs and their owners are evil.

put it this way, 'sausagesoap' is scared of a 2 year old springer right now. And as we aer leaving in the next hour or so and I wont let him log on its going to stay like that for a while.

My heart goes out to the family nothing can help or ease the blame they must be feeling. Tragic and sad !!! Poor little might.

My heart goes out to all concerened You cant go blaming the dog .The parents must be devastated at whats happened its easy for us to say it shouldnt have happened but things do .In hindsight we would all do things differently but unfortunately some pay a very high price just for a split second ,I am not going to judge the parents I just feel deeply sorry for them for losing their child . RIP little one
