please help! updating Cline - cant FTP to DM500a

Hi all,
a friend has given me his box to update a cline. i am using filezilla and have the internal IP address on my network (ping it and it has responded ok)
i have tried using

IP and username and password blank wouldnt connect
tried using username root and also anonymous leaving and passworkd blank still wouldnt connect

this is erorr i get.

Response: 331 Please specify the password.
Command: PASS **************
Response: 530 Login incorrect.
Error: Critical error
Error: Could not connect to server

i know he bought this box with a gift so maybe the box is passworded? how can i tell?
