making audio extension cable

i am so tight that instead of buying another extension cable i bought one of these

as i already had one of these.

i want to have one of these

but i am getting confused on the connections for the wire to the plugs. it was my understanding that you needed to attach one wire to point a and another to point b and then the same on the other side but this does not appear to be working. I think the wire maybe has to touch the main part on the adaptors as well(possibly grounding.)

Can anyone please shed some light on this for me. would be greatly appreciated.
