Last week when i turned my computer on one of my harddrives wasnt showing up so i went to check the bios settings and it said enter password, even though ive never set a password on it i just left it and then my harddrive came back and shows up all the time now, i started backing up all my stuff for a format and so i can boot from cd i have to change the bios settings so i turned my computer of and removed the battery and left it out for about 40minutes, i put the battery back in but the bios is still asking for a password???

the date and time had changed on the computer but the password stayed, so now i cant reformat untill i some how clear this password

does anyone know how i can clear it? i dont have a floppy drive either so i cant boot up of anything

Still asking for a password

gsmmad im not sure what your saying you did

remove the battery then put it back in then remove the jumper turn the computer on and then turn it off and put the jumper back in?

My bios is phoenix i tryed the back doors the other day after seeing them on another site and i cant use the software because you have to boot up from it and i cant change boot device because of the password

tonight when i go to bed if i still havent gotten this off ill take the battery out and put it back in, in the morning

do you know how to short the battery terminals?

Password

Some will ask you for a password even if you didnt set one, if you didnt set one just hit enter or whatever it asks u to hit. Should start up as normal but will probably keep asking for your password.

what mother board is it normally there will be a jumper but rather than take it off you have to locate it in a different position power the computer then turn off and replace on the mother board look for cmos clear wrote on it....

Hello Dizguizer, sorry to hear about your bios probs but I personally would be amazed if you can remove a password, from non-volatile memory, using the processes mentioned in this thread, i.e. shorting jumpers, removing batteries, etc.. I am not saying that it is impossible, just highly unlikely.

I have heard of people going to extraordinary lengths to remove passwords on much older laptops than yours without success. These methods include removing all batteries, including circuit board one, and placing in a refridgerator for several days to use the lower temps to try to kill the password holding chips :)

My only ever success doing so was with a dongle for a Toshiba laptop. You made up a 25 way d-type plug that went into the printer port and when you booted the laptop up it wiped out the passwords by clearing the cmos settings to their defaults. This was on a very old laptop though. I think that the manufacturers of laptops got to grips with this and similar processes years ago, in order to prevent stolen laptops being resold, etc., if they could bypass the passwords on the machine.

I would also think another reason for doing this is to make you pay through the nose when a legit owner forgets his password and requires it to be removed legitamately by the manufacturer, by either specialised "back door" knowledge or failing that replacement of the motherboard :(

Anyway, if you have nothing to loose then proceed as before as there are a lot of clever peeps out there who may well stumble upon your exact method to remove your unwanted password :) While I think on, if you let anyone else have access to it (such as kids, the wife, etc) make sure that they aren't responsible for the password...and if so do your utmost to get them to try to remember what the hell it was. You could try hypnotism if threats of torture fail to yield results :)

Good luck mate, Chris.

I have had this problem in the past, I removed the battery and it took ages for the capacitor to discharge, as prev mentioned look for a shorting jumper, I did short out the termals which connect the battery and that worked for me, and it definately reset the bios password and restored the settings to default......

Try pressing one of the F keys on bootup

It might be possible to get a boot menu up by pressing on of the F keys when starting up, I had a similar problem with a Dell Laptop - maybe try F8 or F10 when starting up and then select boot from CD.

There are a few BIOS reading tools out there once you've got Windows back on !!

Otherwise you could take the hard drive out and load Windows from another PC then put back into your PC ? this will depend on which version and type of Windows XP you have.

IT can be frustrating sometime but there's always a way round..

I removed the battery, the jumper changed it over and tryed everything i could think of then i couldnt install widows because i think it was trying to get infomation from the bios but since it was locked it just kept on crashing, i installed suse linux twice, windows 98, then i downloaded a boot cd and tryed to use cmospwd to give me the password but on my bios it said something like CRC Error Cant Get Pass

then my dad found thay had a bios update on medions site (not sure if it was my version) so i downloaded it in knoppix extracted the three files burnt them to cd, then booted up in dos and changed the drive to the cd drive that the medion update was on and upgraded my bios and it cleared the password, then windows xp installed fine, now its time to change these bloody default settings

oh and im the only one that uses my computer (dont have gf/kids)

thanks to everyone for your suggestions :)
