Owens goal scrappy but a finishers finish the old silk is still there.

I thought Rooney's goal was scrappy not Owen's...he jus didnt strike it as well as he would have liked, but the aim was good enough to make up for that.

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has reiterated that the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo is a severe blow for his defending Premier League champions.

The Portugal international joined Real Madrid this summer in a world-record deal as his former boss finally decided to sell in a long-running transfer saga.

Ferguson is well aware that Ronaldo's departure is a major loss and he has paid a glowing tribute to the ex-United ace.

"Cristiano is a massive loss," said the Red Devils chief. "I have nothing but praise for the boy. He is easily the best player in the world.

"He is better than Kaka and better than (Lionel) Messi. He is streets ahead of them all.

"His contribution as a goal threat is unbelievable. His stats are incredible. Strikes at goal, attempts on goal, raids into the penalty box, headers. It is all there. Absolutely astounding."

Ferguson has also dismissed money-rich Manchester City and their newly-acquired host of stars, such as Emmanuel Adebayor and former Old Trafford hero Carlos Tevez, as a major threat to United's domestic title.

"Given all that has happened in the transfer market this summer, it is a different type of challenge we are facing," he said. "We are being challenged for the back pages.

"Manchester City are getting all the back page stories and they will hold that position for the rest of the season because there is a lot of interest in what they have done and a lot of speculation about whether it is going to work.

"But I cannot look at Manchester City as our main competitors. Liverpool and Chelsea are our main competitors. There is no doubt about that.

MAME BIRAM DIOUF thought his move to Manchester United was a prank.

United have agreed to sign Senegalese striker Diouf, 21, from Norwegian club Molde in January for £2million.

But Molde director Tarje Nordstrand Jacobsen said: "He didn't believe it was true. He thought it was a joke.

"It took a little time before the news hit him. He told me he then couldn't sleep."

Ferguson is not convinced Tevez was worth the £25 million fee United were reluctantly prepared to pay to secure him on a permanent basis following his two-year loan spell at Old Trafford.

Tevez, who has claimed there were “no lines of communication” with United and that he felt “disrespected” by Ferguson, rejected their belated offer and instead joined neighbours City on a contract believed to be worth £150,000 a week.

Ferguson said: “I didn’t think he was worth £25m – that’s just my judgment, maybe I’m wrong.”

And he did not share the enthusiasm of United fans for Tevez – they constantly chanted “sign him up” in the closing weeks of the season.

Ferguson said: “The fans quite rightly have their heroes and I respect them, so I was happy to go along with a deal as long as it was right one – but he was simply not worth £25m.”

Ferguson reckons Tevez’s new club will struggle to break into the Premier League’s top four, despite Mark Hughes’ £80m summer spending spree.

“You’d say well, what’s their best team?” he said. “And you’d have to think they’d still struggle to get into the top four. It would be hard for them.”

Ferguson also believes Arsene Wenger faces the toughest test of his 13-year reign as Arsenal manager because of an acute cash shortage.

Michael Owen feels honoured to have been handed the No.7 shirt and insists he can handle the responsibility that comes with it.

The striker has taken over the number following Cristiano Ronaldo's summer departure to Real Madrid and has already bagged two goals in his first two games in the famous jersey.

Owen is determined to maintain the great traditions of the shirt previously worn by the likes of Beckham, Cantona and Robson, whilst carving out his own history as a United No.7.

"I was quite shocked when the manager asked me to wear it, but obviously very honoured," he told MUTV.

"You only have to look at the last half a dozen players to have worn the shirt... there are some fantastic players and I’ll obviously do my best to continue that tradition, score a few goals and to do the shirt proud.

"I know it means a lot to the fans. That’s what the manager said to me straight away. He said I’d need broad shoulders to wear it and I told him that was fine, that I could handle that responsibility. I don’t feel it will add extra pressure - I think I’m old enough and wise enough not to let it get to me. I’m really proud to have it and hopefully I’ll do well in it."

Sir Alex Ferguson recognises the importance of Wes Brown to Manchester United and hopes he will stay fit this season.

The right-back has been plagued by injuries in recent years, with an ankle operation followed by a foot problem keeping him sidelined for most of last term.

He returned to duty against Hull City on the final day of the campaign but it was only his 13 appearance in all competitions.

Brown has come through the early part of United's pre-season programme unscathed and Ferguson has also been impressed by his performances so far on the tour of Asia.

"If Wes stays fit, we are in business because he is a fantastic defender," said Ferguson.

"Even against the Malaysian team, on a couple of occasions he has showed real experience in handling one-versus-one situations.

"That is what he is really good at. His timing and reading of situations is fantastic. He is quick to get to the ball."

Ferguson accepts that he will have to keep his fingers crossed over Brown's long-term fitness, purely because of what the 29-year-old has been through in the past.

"If Wes stays fit, it is an absolute bonus for us," he said.

"You have to hope he gets the kind of luck he deserves because, when you look at his injury record, it is not a good one."
