What PS2 for a 1st time buyer/modder

I'm looking for a PS2 to play GTA on. Is there a version that people recommend because of its easy repair or great modding potential.
Should I take a chance on a "disc error" machine on eBay?
From reading past posts, it sounds possible to buy some PS2s with wonky lasers but fit a hard disk and load games via my laptop --- is that really possible or have I misunderstood?
As usual, advice will be gratefully received.

I have lots of ps2 with knackered lasers which i break. the easiest won to work on I think would be a v7, or the new v14/15/16

The earlier the model the easier it is to mod. The pads get smaller and smaller on late models.

v12 is a good choice... you can add a HDCombo.

No the ealier isnt easiest, V3 have always proven a problem for newbies to modding.
V12 suffer Laser coil burn, V7 is very easy.
