Up to 20,000 sun worshippers have been celebrating the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge. They have held an annual all-night party at the ancient stone circle on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire that peaked at sunrise this morning - the longest day of the year. Druids, hippies and hedonists are among regulars of the celebration at the 5,000-year-old site.

Drums beat throughout the night while pagan revellers danced around the stones ahead of sunrise at 4.58am.

Officers from Wiltshire Police

were on hand to maintain order, although organisers had been expecting a good-natured event.

A spokeswoman for English Heritage, which runs the famous site, said: "We're hoping for a great sunrise. Last year's was spectacular."

A smaller crowd gathered 30 miles away at the ancient stones in Avebury, where solstice celebrations are traditionally more relaxed and low-profile than those at Stonehenge.

Revellers were lucky with the weather - showers cleared between 4am and 5am when the sun rose.
