What is JTVLAN?

JTVLAN enables to stream and view DVB-T digital TV across the network. It includes a server component (JTVLANServer), which should be installed on machine equipped with a DVB capture card, and a client component (JTVLANClient) which allows to control TV playing and actually receives and displays the stream generated by the server. Being written in Java, the client can be installed on several platforms, in particular it has been tested on Windows and Linux (some users reported it is working on MacOS too).

JTVLANServer is actually an extension of DVB WebScheduler which is an great piece of software which allows to schedule TV recordings but lacks the features of live TV viewing and streaming. Also, both client and server rely on VideoLAN which is a very powerful media player which is able to act as a streaming server too. Both DVB WebScheduler and VideoLAN are free software, as well as JTVLAN.

Main features

* DVB (in particular DVB-T) support on Windows XP platform
* Ability to view live television on any networked PC thus sharing the capture card installed on one PC to every other computer on the network
* Client is cross platform and allows to view television on remote Microsoft Windows, Linux and MacOS systems.
* Simple ad lightweight application with low CPU and memory requirements enabling to freely work on the PC while it is playng, streaming or recording
* No cumbersome user interface and no complete media center or EPG integrated with the viewing application
* Recording funcionality
* JTVLAN is able handle in a limited bud consistent way multiple clients sharing the same server.

On my system (AMD Sempron 3000, 512M RAM) JTVLANServer uses about 2% of CPU and about 15M RAM to perform capture and streaming, while JTVLANClient uses about 20% CPU and 20M RAM to decode and display the MPEG2 stream.

Important: While it is a very lightweight application and live tv viewing should be always smooth if the signal quiality is good, it is quite slow during channel changing (about 10 seconds to change channel). So you should stay away from JTVLAN if you are looking for a more responsive application. Also, JTVLAN does does not have an integrated EPG or Media Center.
