Does using a proxy server not give you a greater degree of anonimity for example masking ones ip address etc etc etc.

Yes i think So i have been testing Some things out that change your I.P. Address and thats what <br />a proxy dose i just don't know how they are configured or whats the best one to use i know<br />that H A C K E R S use them, and i would like to know more!! i have a load of links if you want them i just never have time go go through them <br />and learn Whats What!!!

Proxy's conseal your Ip number a good proxy Is A4 proxy And i have a list of severs to update it with, though going though the proxy is slow i only use it if im serching for appz or going on other forums. <img src="smile.gif" border="0"> <br />I'll upload the list in misc it its up if not i'll put a link in my next post..

I know what a proxy server is and i know what it does but what i would like to know

Can a proxy server be set up on a server like win2k server (run as a service) or does it need its own machine to run

you can use a machine as a proxy and for daily use ..but it will slow down the connection unless ofcourse you have broadband / cable etc etc then the drop in speed will be almost un-noticable

jondoe sorry do u mean u can sit it on a server running as a service eg i have a win2k server running so i can instal a proxy server ontop of the win2k server so it runs as a service.

or will the proxy need its own machine so all i will have running on that one machine is a proxy server and thats it.

Generally though, a fair few use proxies to mask their IP when hacking pay sites e.g. porn.

I also seem to recall somewhere in Internet Explorer there is an option to type in a proxy directly and surf on that but i would imagine that would only be active for anything accessed through explorer
