Not sure what section to put this in...so if there is a more appropriate section, could a mod please move it. I know its computer related but it is also a general topic.

Just got this email from Ngroups.

750 days retention and 30/60 connections...wow.

Ngroups.NET is proud to announce an ALL NEW Usenet Newsgroup server back
end system.

The new server back end includes significant improvements:

- An increase to OVER 780 days binary retention, INCREASING daily

- Better completion, close to 100%, for the full retention

- Better reliability and stability

- Headers available for close to the full retention*

*Current header retention slightly less than 750 days. Retention via
Message-ID or .nzb files is over 780 days.

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO

You can switch over to this new system any time from the time you get this
email, but access to the old system will be discontinued for your account
within about a week after you receive this email.
We recommend switching as soon as you receive this email.

You will need to change settings in your newsreader software to access the
new system.
New settings include new server addresses, and skipped "domain" from the
username:

To access the new system, please use the following server addresses:

US Server: us.Ngroups.NET

EU Server: eu.Ngroups.NET **

You use the SAME server addresses, no matter if you connect using SSL or
not.

** Currently, for migration reasons, we recommend primarily using the US
server, even if you are located in the EU. Even if you have a high
bandwidth connection, you should be able to get full speed from the US
server.

Standard, (non-SSL) ports: 119 + 20, 23, 53, 443, 2000, 8080, 9000,
9001, 9002

SSL ports: 563 + 80, 81

Your USER NAME should be entered WITHOUT the domain part. (No
@Ngroups.NET or similar, any more, just "your username".)

IF YOU ARE CURRENTLY USING HEADERS

If you are currently using headers downloaded from our old system, you MAY
(depending on your newsreader), need to re-download the headers for those
groups. In many cases this should not be needed, but if you get article
not found errors when using old headers, please re-download for that
group.

KNOWN ISSUES

Users with very high bandwidth connections, (over 25-30Mbps), may initially
experience lower download speeds from the new system, compared to the old.
The new system is optimized for the highest reliability and completion,
which in some cases may mean a trade-off in speed. We have used the
philosophy that it's better to get a complete download a few minutes
slower, than an incomplete, in need of repair, faster. The system is
constantly optimized, so speeds will keep increasing even for high
bandwidth users over the next few months.

Please NOTE;
If you have a "Light" or "Eco" account, you may now use 30 simultaneous
connections.
If you have a premium "Extra" account, you may now use 60 simultaneous
connections.

IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING PROBLEMS WITH THE MIGRATION

If you are experiencing any issues switching to, or using, the new server
system, please don't hesitate to contact us, via our support ticket system
at our web site.

Thank you for using Ngroups.NET,

Looks good, I used NGroups before but found I got better speeds from Astraweb.

I hope Astraweb can do something similar as I have a yearly account with them, currently on a 20mb connection and max it out, but getting 50mb installed on Tuesday :D.

Yep got the email today, Sweet.

they have been rock solid over the last year. Wonder if its still possible to use 2 simultaneous IP connections. IE share you account with mates.

I know witchy was the man to point this out.

750 days retention ? i find that a lot of older files 200days+ have something or another missing anyway or are corrupted.

AFAIK, Ngroups just resell access to Astraweb anyway, so performance should have been exactly the same.

Ngroups are superb but they are slowly increasing their pricing.

Oh, I didn't know that. I found my speeds increased when I switched from using the EU server to the US one :).

Yer, you're free to use either the EU or US servers.

IMO the EU server isn't quite as good as the US one, so I just use that one instead. Maybe the EU one is better these days but I just stick to the US one.

I haven't tried the US one as I find the EU one hasn't been any problems for me. I get full speed on my virgin 20meg and have had no problems downloading stuff as old as 600 days.

The following sites has a lot of background information about usenet providers, costs and service,

It does not look like ngroups is a reseller of anybody.

Downloaded whistle kettle DVD off giganews and I believe posting date was over 750 days. Also grabbed some old tv shows the other day and they were close to 800 days old.

I've not used the EU one for over 2 years, lol.

I'm a creature of habit. :)

I'll post my logs. I'm sure Ngroups was piggy backing onto Astraweb. :err:

I think that is showing where the upload was made, not the download location.

....and I think your right! :)

Blimmin hell, that means everything I download was uploaded via Astranews, lol!

has anyone change over to the new servers ,,i was getting 47,48mb from the old server ,just change over and now only getting 16mb if i am lucky ,,not looking like good news to me

Was over at my mates this evening, the one trailing 100mb. Clocked giganews at 11.2MB per second download using newsbin pro. 10GB blu-ray rip took less then 15 minutes to grab.

I guess they are not applying traffic shaping yet.
