Yes, you read that right! Stefan Esser – better known by his online pseudonym i0n1c – has demonstrated an untethered jailbreak on his iPad 3rd-gen running iOS 5.1 on video.

Via a Twitter post, i0n1c has showcased what the jailbreak scene could never have imagined – an almost instantaneous untethered break. He has been working tirelessly, first teasing a jailbreak on Twitter a few hours ago. Although we had been given some promising information by the iPhone Dev-Team in the run-up to the launch of the third-gen iPad, developers striving for exploits often like to build some buzz and momentum about a jailbreak by exaggerating, even if an actual release of a tool seems a fair way off. Without further due, however, the iPhone Dev Team were able to jailbreak the new iPad and posted some screenshots of said device running Cydia.

Unfortunately for some, pictures aren’t enough, and this is where i0n1c came in to the rescue by posting a video on YouTube showing off his new iPad, fully jailbroken, and that too untethered, check out the jailbreak in action for yourself:

Indeed, the jailbreak community had to wait quite a while for an untethered jailbreak on iOS 5, with the A4 untethered jailbreak arriving in December, followed by the A5, Absinthe exploit in January. While we’ve all gotten quite excited by the new, Retina-toting tablet, we always suspected an untethered jailbreak would be a while off – particularly given the extensive amount of time it took for an iPad 2 jailbreak last year before Comex finally brought forth the antidote with JailbreakMe 3.0.

At this point in time, there aren’t any details regarding a release of this jailbreak to the public, but in order to prevent you guys from becoming too spoiled, spending some time appreciating your new iPad at stock level certainly wouldn’t hurt! We’ll bring you all the details as they emerge, so stay tuned to our round-the-clock .
