monitor cable help please

Using a 14” tv as monitor on av for karaoke .
changing the display settings from a laptop so i can drag the words over to the tv screen leaving the desktop free !!!!!!! the tv is knackered and in the bin

I have just got a 20” pc monitor which plugs into my laptop will this do the job of using the monitor.
If i get something like this VGA HD AV with Optical Output Cable for Xbox 360 | eBay
will it work ???????? or can you think of something else that would do the job

What inputs does the Monitor have, and what video outputs does the lappy have?

Inputs on the monitor
one input for a sound lead
plus one for monitor lead

laptop video has a tv output
also use a 4 way av splitter
