Illustrator would be the choice for most graphic artists to create logos in. Though any good image editor will have a typeset feature (even paint).

You really want to create your logo in vector format too, so that its easier to resize. Most printers will expect a vector graphics also.

There are loads of free fonts and royalty free images online. Make sure you read the creative commons or other licence agreement, specifically any section on derivative works.
