I got the below tutorial from another forum - Big thanks to the unknown author - I just watched a film on my TV via dbox and it was perfect! The display even told me the name of the file!

1. Install vlc 0.7.2 ONLY on your Linux or Windows box.

2. Configure your CD or DVD drive and play back any VCD, SVCD or DVD locally. Only if this works continue with the next step. If not get support at http://www.videolan.org/support/ until this works! (Please don't flood the dbox forum with questions how to run the basic VLC)

3. Start "vlc --extraintf=http" from the command line (make sure you are in the VLC directory when doing this, or best still creat a short cut then and this to the end). This will allow VLC to be controlled via a HTTP interface listening on port 8080 by default.

4. Test this by pointing your browser to "http://127.0.0.1:8080". You should see a HTML user interface of VLC.
5. Copy the file dboxfile.html to the http/admin directory of VLC. This file is attached

6. VLC needs to be restarted after copying the file!

7. Point your browser to "http://127.0.0.1:8080/admin/dboxfiles.html?dir=C:" (...dir=/ with Linux). Default username is "admin". Password is "admin". You should see a list of directories and files. If this works continue with the next step.

8. Point your browser to "http://127.0.0.1:8080/admin/dboxfiles.html?stream_time=true" Default username is "admin". Password is "admin". You should see "0". If this does not work you will have no bookmark support and no progress indicator ("?" button).

9. Close browser but leave VLC running (VLC needs to be running at all times to stream to DBOX)

4. How to setup Movieplayer on DBox to play movies

1. Configure Neutrino Movieplayer by going to "dbox - Settings - Movieplayer"

2. Configure the port to the port VLC is listening on. Default is 8080

3. Configure the IP address to be the IP address of the PC where VLC is running on.

4. Configure the DVD Drive (CD Drive) of the PC. Often this is "D:" on Windows and "/dev/cdrom" on Linux

5. Leave "1000" for the video rate and "192" for the audio rate. You can increase this later if you can succesfully stream DVDs or (S)VCDs. The acceptable values here are mostly dependent on the quality of your network (see "Known Bugs")

6. Save the settings

7. Start the Movieplayer from the "dbox" menu

8. Insert a DVD (or SVCD) into the drive of the PC

9. Press the yellow button to start the playback of the DVD (blue for SVCD)

10. After a while the DVD playback will start (if not you will see appropriate error dialogs)

11. You can pause/resume playback using the yellow button (see "Known Bugs")

12. You can stop the playback using the red button

13. Go to the Movieplayer settings and change the VLC directory to a value which contains movie files on the machine VLC is running on. (e.g. "C:\Movies" or "/export/movies". You can't enter a \. So enter a / instead (e.g. "C:/Movies")

14. Save the settings

15. Start the Movieplayer from the "dbox" menu

16. Press the red button and choose a file from your disk. DivX, XVid, MPEG, PS and others should work.

Thanx for sharing that with us m8.
I have edited out the other forum name.

as u cut and pasted it the one link is missing some text

8. Point your browser to "http://127.0.0.1:8080/admin/dboxfil...tream_time=true"
should be
"http://127.0.0.1:8080/admin/dboxfiles.html?stream_time=true"

most setting if not allfor recording/playback seem to be held in neutrino.conf (sportster 1.6 don't know about the rest)

does anyone have a working conf file i can look at please .. or can some kind soul who has this working tell me where i'm going wrong , post a working conf maybee ?..

no .. still rebooting everytime i try and playback a movie

Have you tried with differnet files mate? Have you tried a reflash?

anyone know wat ports need to be forwarded for this to work on a router? i can select the file, when i press to play, it says connecting, and doesn't goto buffering

yeah cheers, tried 8080 and 4000.... but no working, i had it working (not very well right enough, but still working) with nextgen, now im using sportster 1.6 with no luck, i can play back .ts files file, just VLC ain't playin the game

had very limited success with this, got some files to play on the Sagem, also a bit of success with the nokia until I upgraded to the latest VLC (0.8.2), now it just hangs on "connecting to the streaming server..." Nokia was crashing the old VLC too, especially if you tried to skip forwards/backwards in a stream. This is one area where the old Dbox is still lacking, I wonder if we will ever see better support for movie playback other than .ts files?

I had those problems with Next Gen image. Sportster 1.6 works just fine for me.

Thought this might be useful...Kudos to original author whoever you may be again!

I've only been playing about with the DBOX for about a month, but i am really impressed with what people have been able to do. Just finished setting the VLC & DboxWinServer for recording & playback, but didn't like the fact that i had to log into my Window XP system defore the programs could be loaded.

A bit of searching on the internet, and I found a utility that was original design for windows NT3.5 & NT4. Anyhow I gave it a try, and it works with XP as well.

It allows you to make an application startup as a Windows Service, therefore starting it before the user has logged into the system.

The attached file has a windows write file included (shows you how old it is) with instructions but here's what I did it.

1. Unzip the content of the ZIP file into a directory i.e. C:\APP_SERV
2. Go to a DOS prompt, and change into the above directory
3. Type INSTSRV DBOXVLC C:\APP_SERV\SRVANY.EXE (This will create a new service, that windows will load automatically, now we have to tell windows what this service will be)
4. Run REGEDT32 & find the following key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\DBOXVLC

Create a 'Parameters' key underneath this.

In the right hand window create a new string called Application and for it's value type in the full path to VLC application i.e. C:\Program Files\VideoLan\VLC\VLC.EXE

Create a new string called AppParameters and for it's value enter in --extraintf=http (to enable the DBOX to control the VLC application)

Create a new string called AppDirectory and for it's value enter in the directory that the program resides in.

Repeat the above for the DboxWinServer by changing DBOXVLC to DBOXWINSERVER

Once you've done that restart your PC, don't log into yet, go to your DBOX, and try recording & play.

If you need to make any alterations to your configuration of these two products, you will need to stop the service, load the programs, make your alterations, exit the program & then re-start the service.

Hope this is of use to some people

If someone tells me how to attach files Ill post the srvany zip file to!

I`m on sportster 1.7 here, I`m not too concerned with getting this to work because my PC is hooked up to the TV anyway. Just curious to know if this has gone wrong with the 1.7 upgrade.
