Comics Britannia is a dazzling new three-part series celebrating the classic comic strips of the past 70 years.

Narrated by Armando Iannucci, it features interviews with the creators of iconic characters from The Beano, Bunty, Commando, Viz, 2000AD and more. After episodes one and three have aired, watch out for even more interview footage of comic giants Leo Baxendale and Alan Moore here on the BBC Four website, and come back soon for further articles by expert Paul Gravett.



1. THE FUN FACTORY

Concentrating on the work of comic geniuses such as Leo Baxendale, programme one takes us from the launch of The Dandy through to the comics of the mid-1960s to examine how the anarchic humour of these cheap, colourful publications enchanted an entire generation.

2. BOYS AND GIRLS

From Dan Dare, Captain Hurricane and Roy of the Rovers to the distressed damsels of Bunty, Girl and School Friend, part two celebrates the gender-defining comics of post-war Britain. Includes interviews with celebrity fans such as Jacqueline Wilson.


3. ANARCHY IN THE UK
Mon 24 Sep 9pm-10pm TBC

In the 1970s and 1980s comic books became darker, more graphic and more adult. This programme features interviews with ground-breaking writers such as Alan Moore, who spearheaded this new wave of comics.
