Block some cinema time out in your diary as 2005 shapes up to be a bumper year in the filmic sense...

Keep abreast of the whoppers, such as the very last Star Wars film, the next Harry Potter instalment and Spielberg and Cruise's War Of The Worlds, but don't miss the smaller fry either.

JANUARY 2005

Alexander - Despite having some dire reviews after opening in the States, the A-list cast in Oliver Stone's epic will ensure that plenty of movie fans rock up to see Colin Farrell's golden locks, Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, Val Kilmer, Rosario Dawson and Jared Leto in this historical action drama.

Team America

Meet The Fockers - This sequel to Meet The Parents sees the introduction of Greg (Gaylord) Focker's olds, played hilariously by Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand, also starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro.

Team America - The much-hyped puppet movie from the makers of South Park has caused mild controversy with the scenes of puppets getting filthy in the bedroom - worth a trip if you fancy a giggle.

The Magic Roundabout

Ladder 49 - If you loved Backdraft back in the early 90s, then the chance is you'll love this new fireman drama starring Joaquin Phoenix and John Travolta - also starring that face of 1990 Balthazar Getty.

Closer - There's mumblings of Oscars for this all-star movie about love and romance between two couples, starring Julia Roberts, Jude Law, Natalie Portman and Clive Owen.

Batman Begins

Vanity Fair - From Bend It Like Beckham director, Mira Nair, this movie will go down a treat with period drama fans, starring Reese Witherspoon, Rhys Ifans, Gabriel Byrne, Jim Broadbent and James Purefoy.

Closer

Million Dollar Baby - Another strong film in the Golden Globe nominations list, this Clint Eastwood drama stars Hilary Swank as a female boxer, alongside Clint himself and Morgan Freeman.

Sideways - This comedy is another movie looking forward to the awards season, with seven Golden Globe nominations under its belt.

Vera Drake - Imelda Staunton brings gravitas to this Mike Leigh drama about an abortionist clashing against the social mores of 1950s Britain.

Madagascar

The Magic Roundabout - With high-profile voice overs from the likes of Robbie Williams, Kylie Minogue, Jim Broadbent, Joanna Lumley and Ray Winstone, this feature film version of everyone's favourite trippy cartoon hits the cinema.

Ray

The Woodsman - It's not a comfortable watch, but the performance of Kevin Bacon as a paedophile is unnervingly sympathetic and will definitely be the subject of plenty of movie chat.

MARCH 2005

Robots - There's plenty of hype about this new animated adventure movie - voiced by the likes of Halle Berry, Ewan McGregor, Jim Broadbent, Robin Williams and Greg Kinnear.

Robots
