Team GB Line up Walter As Boss.
WALTER SMITH has been targeted to boss Team GB in the Olympics.
SunSport can reveal that talks have already taken place between top-level operators involved with the London 2012 to bring the former Rangers manager out of retirement.
No approach has been made yet — but it's understood that Smith would jump at the chance to be involved in next summer's showpiece.
Insiders close to the team are desperate to widen the appeal of Team GB, with no Scots expected to play in the glittering tournament.
The DON'T want to be part of the set-up, despite claims from the British Olympic Association that an historic agreement had been reached with all the home nations.
But organisers are determined there will be a Scottish flavour to the team — and have put Smith top of their list of candidates to manage the side.
England Under-21 boss Stuart Pearce had been touted for the role. That has now been ruled out over fears it would alienate fans outwith England.
Now they're ready to ask Smith if he will make a sensational return to football in a bid to lead GB to gold medal glory.
Smith told SunSport last week he hadn't ruled out returning to work.
The short-term nature of the job could be the perfect solution for one of Scotland's most successful managers of all time.
He said: "It's just a matter of waiting to see if anything else comes my way.
"If I got the offer of something I felt was right I'd do it. If I don't, then I'm sure I'll cope.
"If you ask, am I a retired football manager or an out of work football manager — the current answer is somewhere in between.
"When I made the decision to leave Rangers everyone said I was retiring, but I didn't. We'll see how things go."
Even if Smith does take on the role, it's unlikely that would tempt Scots players to perform a u-turn and take part.
Scots boss Craig Levein held a meeting with his players earlier in the year stressing it was their decision to make.
The current squad unanimously decided they DIDN'T want to take part, standing by the SFA party line. But if Smith were to take part, it would be sure to cause a fresh groundswell of support from Scotland for Team GB.

Re: Team GB Line up Walter As Boss.
Would be good if he did take the job. Might be right up his street, as its a short term job.
And if its in the sun, it must be true
