To install Telnet Client on Windows 7 or Windows Vista

  • Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
  • On the Control Panel Home page, click Programs.
  • In the Programs and Features section, click Turn Windows features on or off.
  • If the User Account Control dialog box appears, confirm that the action it displays is what you want, and then click Continue.
  • In the Windows Features list, select Telnet Client, and then click OK.

or better get putty - its free and a single exe and no need to install

I use it all the time for ssh, telnet

M/soft take all the tools you need out of windows, so they have room for all the blingy things that get used once and then nobody uses again.

I use and always have, hyper-terminal for cisco routers and retrieving firmware info from some specialist printers.

When i got my new all singing all dancing Tosh netbook from work to replace my trusty but seriously ageing dell laptop not only did the Tosh not have a serial port (admittedly not m/soft fault) but hyper-terminal was "missing" from win7 had to rescue it from my laptop before it went back :)

putty has serial port support for connecting to cisco routers .. I use putty to connect to a IBM Proventia appliance box for upgrades for the application.
