Guys.

Be cautious...

Visa and MasterCard Scam.

It works like this: Person calling says, 'this is Carl Patterson (any name) and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460. Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Company a device/any expensive item, for £497.99 from a marketing company based in (any town?)
When you say 'No'. The caller continues with, 'Then we will be issuing a credit to your Account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from £297 To £497, just under the £500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (they give you your address), is that correct?'

You say, 'Yes'. The caller continues . . 'I will be starting a fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 0800 number listed on your card and ask for Security. You will need to refer to this Control number. They then give you a 6-digit number. 'Do you need me to read it again?'
Caller then says he 'needs to verify you are in possession of your card' (this is where the scam takes place as up until now they have requested nothing!). They then ask you to turn your card over.

There are 7numbers; the first 4 are 1234 (or whatever, as they have your number anyway).

The next 3 are the security numbers that verify that you are in possession of the card' (these are the numbers they are really after as these are the numbers you use to make internet purchases to prove you have the card).

'Read me the 3 numbers.' When you do he says 'That is correct. I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions? Don't hesitate to call back if you do.'
You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number. But after we were called on Wednesday, we telephoned back within 20 minutes to ask a question. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA security department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of £497.99 WAS put on our card. Long story made short.

We made a real fraud report and closed the VISA card and they are reissuing us a new number. What the scam wants is the 3-digit number and that once the charge goes through, they keep changing every few days. By the time you get your statement, you think the credit is coming, and then it's harder to actually file a fraud report.
THE REAL VISA/MASTERCARD DEPARTMENT REINFORCED THE POINT THAT THEY WILL NEVER ASK FOR ANYTHING ABOUT THE CARD SINCE THEY ALREADY KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!!!.
What makes this even more remarkable is that on Thursday I got a call from 'Jason Richardson of MasterCard' with a word for word repeat of the VISA Scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up. We filed a police report (as instructed by VISA), and they said they are taking several of these reports daily and to tell friends, relatives and co-workers so please pass this on to your friends................

thanks 4 dat, if they ring me i will play along and then givem the wrong number!! hehehehe!!

an online or customer not present transaction will still be authorised even if the 3 digit number is wrong, its just a number to prove that you are in posession of the card, so IN THEORY you could order things off the net, enter the wrong security number, report your card as missing the day after and the goods will still arrive.

this is not a guide to commit card fraud, its not as easy as that, just pointing out that this number aint as secure as people believe

how this normally happens is they have intercepted a statment on its way to you, they then have your name, address, full card number, credit limit, so they will say to you "can you verify that the 5th 6th and 9th digit of the card number is 6, 8 and 0" you say yes, they ask you to confirm the expirey date (as this aint on a statment) which you do as they already confirmed the number and your name etc, they get your number from the phonebook etc. the original message above has been round since the security numbers were first introduced and started in america and to be honest its one of the hardest ways to get all the details you need to commit fraud. if someone really does phone you to confirm details they will ask you for your account password or passcode, they will then phone visa and makeout they are you, tell them that they have lost the card (your card) and that they have moved house (thats when the card got lost), they will then give 'your' new address and thats it, you have now lost controll of your account, someone has become you. they apply for a new credit limit, a new pin is issued along with a new card to the new address and you dont know nothing about it untill you realise that your card hsa been cancelled and you ring to find out why, thats when you find out that your password has been cahnged along with your address, credit limit, pin number and credit left on the account (usually none)

hope it explains things a bit

:)

(just dont ask lol)

Those guys must have got card details (including addresses) from maybe an unsecured internet site, some retailer such as electrical sellers also print their customers address on the receipt...its possible that someone must have got hold of these records..

Any other possibilities??

if you go to ANY garage in the UK theres at least 1000 details that you can use to commit fraud, the people working in the garage dont realise how much information is on a till roll that is thrown out after a few months, people that use garages and pay by card are just as bad, they walk out the door and throw the reciept they have just signed into the bin, you now have their signature as well as their registration number (which can be used to find out who they are)

your right bout the garages digi, ive known a few dodgy pertol court attendents!! ( not personally) who sell credit card details!! so beware lads, always pay cash for yr fuel!!!

its not the dodgey attendants you need to watch out for, they are very few and far between, for the average cashier to get your details whilst working at the till its nearly impossible. its the tight arsed managers who dont dispose of paperwork in the proper manner (esso garages are the worst/best lol)

ive known people who have gone to a bin at 2 in the morning and had enough numbers to use for years (as every needed card detail is logged), careless people are the best sources for material, they just dont know it.

PS no i dont do fraud

any more

thanx for the info though they would have to deposit about 500 quid in my account to get anyway as it over its limit lol ;)

This has been around for a while - can't stress enough never give your detail to anyone who calls you or emails you. If you are not sure contact the bank directly using the telephone number on your card or through their official website.
