installed win 7 over vista ,,,,,now pc is p#ss slow

any ideas how to sort

also depends on how you define it as slow.

How old is the PC you have installed this on? Generally, consensous view is Win7 is a lot more speedier then the legacy systems out there. I personally have found it to be pretty good, i.e. speed wise.

Are there any background processes taking place. It perhaps may be downloading updates or something along those lines.

What's the processing power/memory usage?

Win7 also has some inbuilt troubleshooting guides. Have a browse through control panel ==> Troubleshooting.

Also have a look and use the Resource Monitor (All Programs ==> Accessories ==> System Tools ==> Resource Monitor to identify what processes are memory hungry. It could be something that is incompatible with the O/S.

sorry ...should av been a bit clearer
installed 7 over vista. 8 mnth old lappy
now have option to use 7 OR vista
if i use 7 its fine but bookmarks ,favs desktop icons not present
so i choose vista and all is running but very slow

during 7 install....was prompted to do a back up of all files etc

sounds like it's now dual booting if you can run both operating systems.

personally, i'd back all your personal data up and then do a clean install. at the w7 install screen, select 'advanced' features and delete ALL the partitions and then it will be starting from scratch.

bear in mind, if the original recovery partition is on the hard disk (instead of disks you may have got with it) you'll lose that too. Also, as it's a laptop, you might need to find a few drivers afterwards.

As a rule, w7 should atleast aswell as Vista, usually much better.

EDIT - when i say backup -= OFF the laptop completely, onto a USB hard drive or burnt onto DVD's. This will be your data though, not installed programs.

thx
at boot its asking which o/s to use as both are there
i did data backup already and system recovery backup dvd discs
acer lappy.........so no original disks

can i delete one of the o/s or use the discs to add to w7

so you have a set of Vista recovery disks you created? thats good, always good for a fall back position.

I'd re-run w7 setp, select 'Custom' installation, then on the next screen ( i think) select 'Advanced' - you should be able to see ALL the partitions. Delete them all untill have to have is 1 listed as 'unallocated space' and it should be the size of you hard disk (well, nearly) - then let it install it to that.

that way, you'll have 1 booting OS using all the space.

thx again, will hava look when i get home
will i be able to add desk icons/progs etc from the disks or have to start all again

yeah, you'll have to install all your own programs once the new build is done - you won't be able to access them from the backup. Make sure all you data is backed up though - music, photos, etc

bod..

Have a read of the following....

Dual boot installation with Windows 7 and XP

Its based of XP dual boot.

With the setup you are talking about, I would NOT have Vista running together with Win7. The latter is a far superior version of Vista and I would thrash the former.

Best way .. all recommended.. is to do a clean install of Win 7.

I think i would do as most have said and back up your files and programs and go for a clean install option with 7 or dual boot 7 with xp.
To save a lot of hassle during installation i would download a live cd called gparted which you can boot from and it scans your hdd and lets you decide how to partition your hdd and format it also.

I was running xp and then i partitioned my hdd and installed 7.
After i installed 7 i was automatically given the choice at boot up to boot from 7 or an older version of windows which was xp.
I have had no problems with it so far.

ye thx......done that no probs so far, both o/s running smooth but all progs still on vista so pain at the moment
