sorry if this is old news lol
Sky is among a group of pay TV operators and equipment manufacturers considering a legal challenge to the European Union's imposition of import duty on some set top boxes.
The EU has, apparently unexpectedly, introduced tariffs on STBs with hard disks and Ethernet connections, such as those used for Sky's digital video recorder Sky+.
They fall outside the definition of an STB in existing trade agreements, the EU has argued, and are being classified as video recorders which carry a 13.9% tax.
Sky, Sky Italia, cable operator UPC and manufacturers Thomson and Pace are among those who may appeal to the European Court of Justice or the World Trade Organisation, according to New Media Markets.
"Like others in the industry we will consider an appeal," said a Sky spokesman. "A number of member states, including the UK, opposed the Commission's decision to reclassify."
The change will reportedly cost the broadcaster an additional £15m a year and a possible £30m in back charges.
