Many thanks to you all for your time and patience, I have got it booted up into an image.
I found an e-Star bootloader on another forum and used that, followed by the e-Star image that "Ferret" linked to. Turned it off then back on and it started OK. I will see if I can locate another cleaner image from somewhere as the one I used was a backup with some stuff in I will never use.
